The Edition XS is a large open back planar headphone that stands out for huge soundstage, strong detail, and sub bass that feels well above the price. It also responds well to EQ and sounds better from a decent DAC and amp, though it can still play from weaker sources at lower expectations. The main tradeoff is fit, since the loose clamp and oversized headband can slide around without a comfort strap, and the treble can run bright for some. Refurb units have arrived like new, but a few have shown packaging gaps or driver issues.

Common Questions (5)

  • They are very large, light, and have little clamping force, so they can slip off smaller or normal-sized heads. A Capra strap or similar top strap is a common fix, while people with larger heads report a better fit.

  • Many arrive looking like new and sounding excellent, but packaging can be minimal and some units have issues such as loose earcups, missing foam inserts, hinge squeaks, rattles, or even a dead driver. Testing the full frequency range on arrival is important because defects may only show up in bass-heavy tones.

  • It can play directly from a source, but it sounds fuller and more dynamic with an amp or DAC/amp. Several setups mentioned as working well include an Apple dongle, FiiO K5/K11, Qudelix 5K, Atom amp, and Topping D30 + Atom; weak motherboard audio can sound subdued.

  • It has a huge soundstage and strong detail, which works well for single-player and story games, but the presentation is very wide and front imaging can feel weak. That makes it better for music and immersive gaming than for convincing frontal sound in movies or competitive play.

  • The deal price can land around the mid-$80s to low-$90s after coupons, but some codes only work above certain cart totals. Reported totals include $81 before tax with a $12-off coupon, $89.41 after a $20-off code, and about $96.10 with a $12 coupon.

back to stock. also any dac or amp to recommend, which best pair with this?
Doesn't sound like it needs a powerful dac amp so a fiio k11 should do fine. I am going to keep using my old e07k.

I can't believe this thing is still in stock.

Maybe to help answer some general questions.

Is it worth it, despite QC complaints about the brand?
YES, 100% YES. It would be impossible to find a better headphone at this price, period. This headphone was well worth it when it was $500 and still punched above its price tag.

Is this better than the Sundara?
YES, it has a wider soundstage and more bass, quite a bit more fun to listen to. If you do not like a wider stage and want something a bit more intimate, the Sundara is fine, seeing as you can get those cheap these days as well.

Do I need a amp for these. Yes and No. Depends on your motherboards built in solution and the PC's DAC might not be worth amping also.

For example: My recent MSI PRO X670-P motherboards Realtek Chip just can't handle the XS. I can get a listenable volume but its very clear the headphone is not getting enough current with everything sounding kind of subdued. 100% volume.

Now with a Apple Dongle, despite being 100% of the volume, this is right at where I like to listen with the headphone that is around the 70-75dB range. The Apple Dongle sounds way better, the headphone sounds fuller and not as muted across the board which clearly my PC is not able to provide enough current to the headphone. If you want lots more headroom, just about anything more powerful than a Apple Dongle will get you there

Regarding synergies, I'd recommend a dac/amp that is not too analytical or bright, for fear of the treble on the XS being a bit too bright for some or the entire presentation being too lean. The XS likes warm leaning neutral gear. XS sounds like a dream if you have any R2R dacs or multibit stuff. For a real treat, try boosting the bass on the XS.... the XS knows how to party and you will LOVE it.

This is a screaming deal, but can anyone recommend a deal on a closed back Planar? (I'm in a noisy environment.)

I own a hd560s (for gaming). And hd6xx for music. Ordered this after reading most reddit comments and review. Claiming howthis are better than even the hd600. After eq can even match $1k headphones sound quality
100%. Glad you found the same. I am tempted to pick up this deal since I loved them so much. Honestly, I tried the Senn HD600's and returned them because these hifimans had just blown the "famous" HD600's out of the water. It wasn't even close. Not to mention the flexibility you get with EQ and planars...like actual sub bass.

I'd say my only complaint is with the massive soundstage mids are a TAD recessed. But then again...I found the HD600's to have even MORE recessed mids.

Got mine today. Sound is great. A bit dissapointed in the packaging though. Mine didn't have the foam headphone stand and one of the earcups was loose so had to carefully click it back in. One of the hinges also make a bit of squeak but nothing I notice while using. Other than those small issues, headphones have been good. Did other people get the foam insert or was it missing for the refurbs?

There is one available for 103.23. Check the site.
Thanks, I ordered this morning. Initially the refurb listing was down altogether, but it is back now. I used the $12 coupon, so the deal is just as good.

AMAZING DEAL. I paid $220 for mine 3 years ago and that was a steal then. Still holding up great and sounding amazing. Get the capra strap for better fitment although it fit my big head well without.

Im actually impressed. Dont have much to compare (hd560s, hd600, hd6xx, bd 900 pro x). I was blown away by the sound of this headphone compare to those (amp fioo k5). Temping to buy a second one. Havent tried them for gaming yet but if they do work well im ditching my hd560s
