I'm not sure which is jumping the shark, Carhartt or the crossbody bag...

I caved in and bought both brown and black. I've paid $10 each for a much smaller adidas, Nike and 32 degrees type bags. And $15 for a generic running belt from Amazon. And the Carhartt is much better quality. I wish there was an extra zipper security pocket in back and extra loop for keys in main larger pocket

If it was made of their famous duck canvas, it would be a deal.

The zipper being a single pull makes this a tough recommendation. Every time I use the large pocket especially it feels like everything is going to fall out.

Is this a weird gift for my wife's birthday? She complains about taking her normal bag to day long functions.

I got this in black a few months ago because it's nearly the perfect size and pocket config for:
  • Kindle Paperwhite
  • Glasses case
  • Wallet
  • Phone
  • Keys
I also have a micro for just phone/wallet/keys and a larger bag for when I want to bring a light jacket.

The single-pull zipper is definitely a drag, but it's not a real issue for me since I don't keep a lot of loose stuff in the main compartment. If you're planning on keeping lots of small things in it, that might be a deal-breaker.

The strap is a textured nylon that slides around a bit as I walk, but not too bad. I might replace it with a canvas one at some point.

Can we stop with the cross branding? Lately I've seen a lot of brands known for expensive but well made products slapping their logo on something that's 1) completely unrelated to their original product, 2) is overpriced compared to other no-brand versions of the same product (while probably made in the same factories), and 3) is clearly not even close to the quality of the original brand product. I can see from the picture that this bag is not made from Carhartt material. The material looks thin and unevenly sewn and this is their marketing photo? They're not even trying.

It's also ugly. Just cause it's a man purse, that doesn't mean it can't be a little stylish.

By "Carhartt material," do you mean their duck canvas? While that's their best-known fabric, it's definitely not their only one. They also have other types of cotton (like rigby and twill) as well as nylon and polyester across their lines.

Not sure what you mean about something that's unrelated to their products. Carhartt has made backpacks, tool bags, and other bags [carhartt.com] for years.

You're right that the fabric isn't anything super special: just normal 600-denier polyester. But that fabric is quite durable by nature (popular for athletic duffel bags), and the stitching on mine is straight/solid.

I agree that nobody should pay MSRP ($33) for this bag, but after owning it for a few months, I'd say that $20 (today's price, and what I paid) is reasonable if it meets your specific needs. You can definitely get something cheaper from a random brand on Amazon/Temu, but my experience with pieces like that suggests they're more likely to have the QC issues you talked about. Many will also use a less dense weave and just not list the specific number.

Agree that it's not stylish at all. But I bought it for functional reasons: I recently realized I prefer carrying stuff in a cross-body than my pockets, and most bags are either micros that won't fit my Kindle, larger ones that are bulkier than I prefer, or don't have enough pockets to carry my phone/keys/wallet separate from each other or in a way that's easy to access. This one checks all those boxes, and I have other bags if I care about how it looks.

It's not a purse, It's called a satchel. Indiana Jones wears one.
