The Ninja CREAMi XL is a strong fit for high protein, low fat frozen desserts, with the CreamiFit and Light Ice Cream settings producing smooth, legit tasting ice cream after a spin or respin. The larger 24 ounce tubs help avoid running out mid serving, and the machine also handles sorbet, Italian ice, froyo, and slushie style drinks with plenty of room for custom recipes. The main knocks are price and reliability, with some calling it expensive for what it is and noting past units that broke. A good match if you want customizable frozen treats and can live with the learning curve.

Common Questions (4)

  • It can make very good high-protein, low-fat frozen desserts, and the texture can be close to or better than regular ice cream for those recipes. For ultra-low-fat mixes, the CreamiFit or Light Ice Cream settings with a respin can help, but very low-fat bases may still turn chalky without a little added liquid between spins.

  • At around $187, it is considered pricey by some, especially compared with refurb units around $90 or a compressor ice cream maker. It can still make sense if you use it often, want customizable protein desserts, and value Costco's return policy if the machine fails.

  • There are reports of earlier Creami units breaking down, including Deluxe machines that failed quickly and needed warranty coverage or replacement. The XL is described as smoother and more premium to lock in, but long-term durability is still a concern for heavy daily use.

  • The XL's 50% larger container helps avoid running out mid-cone and reduces the need to stop and respin another pint. It also keeps the simpler scoop-and-serve workflow, while the Swirl's soft-serve dispenser is seen as less useful than just scooping into cones.

I just picked this up at Costco for $199 with 3 tubs. I honestly wasn't sure what to think, I wanted to find a way to get some high protein, low fat snacks in after a workout. I am blown away with how well this thing works and how legit good the ice cream is that comes out of it. Super simple recipes, my go to is a simple cookies and cream and I can't put it down. Macros are fantastic, texture is honestly better than ice cream to me and it's healthy. I'd happily buy this again.

What's the recipe for cookies an cream
450g of fairlife 2% (ultra filtered milk)
30g Vanilla Protein
8g sugar free white chocolate pudding mix
5g sugar alternative, I found monk fruit with allulos is FANTASTIC.

freeze it. Run light ice cream. Respin it. Add 4 oreo cookies and run the mixing function.

I honestly can't tell it isn't ice cream and the texture is spot on.

I'm definitely considering getting this and returning or selling my swirl version. My biggest complaint with swirl is the soft serve dispenser side seems gimmicky. The original containers are small enough that you almost always run out halfway through a third kids cone. Then waiting to re-spin another container takes all the thrill out of the experience. 50% larger container, with smaller actual machine footprint (since the swirl is so big just for the short period of time you push out ice cream), and I'm happy to just scoop into cones and save the "swirl" soft serve for the ice cream shops.
It's 1000% a gimmick and the world has fallen for it. It does not make soft serve, it just extrudes into the soft serve shape we are used to.

Honestly for this price, why not just get an actual ice cream maker with a built-in compressor instead of this overpriced ice shredder?

Love my $90 refurb Creami from Woot. $187 is a bit too pricey for what this is, though.

I use ours daily. Had to initially use warranties on both (one at vacation home) and have since been good to us. I just use fairlife milk 100-125g of protein powder, Monkfruit drops and vanilla extract- chocolate is just the fairlife milk and the protein powder. Mix with immersion blender and freeze. I have never done the 10 minute defrost- oops. We do slushie mixed drinks using crystal light mix and water. I purchased the extra containers with coozies. Way better than a water downed drink with ice.

I do similar, 240g free almond milk, 240g fairlife 0%, 20g flavored protein powder (whey/casein blend), 4g sugar free pudding, 3 scoops allulose, 1/4tsp xanthan gum. Despite basically no fat it comes out nice enough, normal spin, add a splash of almond milk, then a respin. Without adding the splash of almond milk in between it comes out chalky texture but that fixes it and makes it smooth.

...Do you really use 100-125 grams protein powder??? Thats like 4 scoops 100+ grams protein per creami? I'm using less than a scoop but trying to keep it low calorie moderate protein (my low calorie creation is only 200 cals with macros 30p/3f/10c. If im not cutting I will add some amount of PB powder, cereal, or chocolate chips to make it tastier and up the cals)

I got the Slushie from Costco about two months ago. It's been hit or miss. Seems like everything I wanted is better with the CREAMi

Something like this I'd only buy at Costco, I'd want the ability to return it if it fails, as many of them do.

You can't get ice cream texture from low fat content stuff like protein ice cream using one. Same with stuff like sorbets made with just fruit juices or whole fruit. If all you want is to make standard style ice cream though, yes, a regular ice cream maker is probably the better buy.

What is the 'creamifit' setting? Anyone own this and the older model, is this materially better?
I just upgraded because my last one broke. I've had it about 5 days now. The creamifit setting is for protein ice creams, or lower fat/lower sugar ones. On the older ninja, I would have to run a respin on the lite ice cream setting. The creamifit setting runs for 8 minutes! But this basically eliminates the need for a respin and the texture is so much creamier than doing a spin and respin on the older model. The machines feels a little more "premium" too. When you slide the canister in, then twist to install and lock it, it's so much smoother. My old one used to kind of hiccup as I twisted it to lock it. This one just locks smooth and easily. So far I really love it! $199 at Costco and comes with 3 pint containers. The pints are the same as the older model and interchangeable so I was able to keep all my old XL pint containers too!
