This ORICO 5 bay USB 3.0 enclosure is mainly a simple JBOD storage box for media servers and backup setups. It has worked well with two drives and on a Plex server, and the 5 bay design can be useful for compact multi drive storage. The main tradeoff is speed, with sustained throughput around 235 MB per second and a shared bottleneck across all bays. There are also reports of random spin up delays, occasional lost connections, and some USB 3.0 versions not reporting serial numbers. It is a practical pick if you want basic multi drive expansion without RAID.

Common Questions (5)

  • It can sustain about 235 MB/s total, with peaks around 250 MB/s. That shared bottleneck means all 5 bays are limited by the enclosure interface, so it is much slower than 10Gbps USB or Thunderbolt DAS options.

  • Yes, it can work fine for a media server or Plex setup, including with two HDDs on a mini PC and with the 9958RU3 version on a Plex server. The main tradeoff is that the USB 3.0 model's shared bandwidth is much lower than newer 10Gbps enclosures.

  • No. The Amazon description says it does not support RAID, and it is described as JBOD rather than a NAS. That means the bays are presented as separate drives instead of a built-in RAID array.

  • The 80mm fan is considered small for a 5-bay unit, and similar ORICO 5-bay models have been reported to run hot, spin up slowly from sleep, and occasionally lose connection. A larger-fan enclosure or added cooling can help keep drives under 100F.

  • The older USB 3.0 version has been reported to fail to report drive serial numbers and to have issues when multiple enclosures are connected. The older USB-C model is said to avoid those problems.

I ended up using a small insulated lunch cooler bag for HDD transport too, but bare bones drives in Cushioned antistatic bags (and WD passports). Just a last minute grab as I had nothing else when traveling last minute. I wasn't sure if I was nuts for doing so but it worked well.

Goodnidea for something like this, I'll make note.

I use the 4-bay regularly. It uses 30W power whether the computer is on or not. I built a 5V relay to cut power when the computer turns off.

This is very helpful. Thank you.

Unfortunately, the Terramaster deal is dead.

Your link to the other Orico enclosure doesn't work for me. Do you mean this one [amazon.com]?

If so, the customer reviews are very mixed.

Does anyone have another suggestion?

You don't even need to go anywhere near $280, let alone $700. 😂

There's literally another Slickdeals thread right now for the TerraMaster D4-320 4-bay for $152: https://slickdeals.net/f/19892376USB

3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps, and TerraMaster claims up to 1,016 MB/s aggregate with 4 HDDs. So for basically the same money, you're looking at ~1 GB/s vs ~235 MB/s total.

And if 5 bays are a requirement, we don't even need to leave ORICO: https://a.co/d/0bGehXptThat's

That's ORICO's 5-bay USB 3.2 Gen 2 / 10Gbps model. It's currently $179.99 with a 15% coupon, so $152.99.

So no, the alternatives aren't "$280 for maybe 2x faster" or "$700 for 4x faster RAID 0." You can spend ~$152 and simply not have a 235 MB/s bottleneck shared across 4–5 hard drives.

Also, 10Gbps isn't ~2x 235 MB/s. 235 MB/s is only ~1.88Gbps. A 10Gbps USB link is over 5x the raw bandwidth, and ~1 GB/s real-world aggregate is completely realistic for this class of enclosure.

That's why I was laughing at the 235 MB/s limit. It's not that 235 MB/s is unusable. It's that putting 5 drive bays behind a ~235 MB/s aggregate bottleneck in 2026 is a hilariously bad design when similarly priced alternatives don't have that limitation.

Edit: And to answer your question about how much that "UP TO" actually means in practice: I use the TerraMaster D4-320 in my media server, and I've personally seen it hit around 1,034 MB/s during parity checks across the array.

So yes, these enclosures can actually get very close to the advertised ~1 GB/s aggregate throughput. "Up to" isn't doing nearly as much heavy lifting there as you seem to think. 😄

$120 for the enlosure, and only $5000 for the drives. 😂
It would've served you correct had you been purchasing hard drives prior to the shortage and disruption. I've been buying multiple high-capacity external disk storage on sale to shuck over the years ever since Best Buy introduced their "easystore" branded WD drives in 2018. I can count at least 10x in my possession currently and that's not including the ones that were part of PC builds I gave away.

Sorry, replying from the app screwed up the formatting and links. The product you linked is the correct one. I just can't vouch for the quality since I've never used Orico.

For TerraMaster, it looks like it's currently out of stock on Amazon. But it's been posted on Slickdeals six times since June, so $152 seems to be pretty much their normal sale price at this point. If you don't mind waiting, I'd probably give it a few days and see if Amazon restocks it.

Saw a 20TB HDD at Best Buy the other day.....ONLY $700. Used to get them on sale for $220 and I thought that was still too expensive. I have 8TB of room left on my 60TB Plex server then I guess I'll just delete some stuff. What a joke these last few years have been.

80mm is small for a 5 bay. I don't have any experience with this particular one, but I had a 5 bay Yottamaster PS500U3. Even with a Noctua fan upgrade, it wasn't enough to keep the drives cool. I believe this Orico uses a single shared SATA bridge across all 5 bays like the Yottamaster, which in my experience resulted in pretty bad performance - my 4 drive array would hang up waiting on IO operations on the 5th drive.

For context I'm running 4x Seagate Exos 6TB enterprise drives in RAID 0, and a single Seagate 2X14 dual actuator drive. I use a Sabrent DS-SC5B with a 120mm Noctua NF-P12 that while not silent, is very quiet and keeps everything below 100F.
