Thinkcentre PCs are built and supported to enterprise standards, meaning the components last longer than budget brands and driver updates and availability is among the best.
This isn't for gaming or AI workloads, but ideal for low hassle grandparent's computer, shared web browsing terminal, or even light server duty.

I understand it has two dual-channel capable SODIMM, and can support up to 64GB, DDR4-3200. Of course RAM is not as easy to come by anymore, but if you need it, you can get it

The most valuable part of this is the AMD Pro cpu - this means it supports DASH for out of band management - basically an embedded BMC https://www.amd.com/en/support/do...tools.html

For home labs this is huge, as you can remote power, access bios, and reimage the machine without physical access

Do you need enterprise license for management?

As an alternative, a 5600u/5650u( hp probook 445 g8) laptop is about 20% slower and is basically a 15 watt version of this cpu. They're usually around $200ish. They both have vega 7 graphics.

Agree out of band management is nice to have, and you don't really have to pay extra for it. In theory a home server should be stable.. in practice things can break, at least for me lol.

And while this is a excellent form factor and spec/price point for a homelab, I think something like a M70q with 12500t can be had for this price and edges it out because it has better transcoding for media server usage, as well as slightly lower idle power usage.

Still either would be a great option - significantly better than a more common retail option like a n100 box. And absolutely DESTROYS SBCs like rpi 5

It should also support ECC RAM, although i don't know if there are DDR4 SO-DIMM ECC.

(I have the SFF variant M75s with 5650G, and i can confirm ECC UDIMM DDR4 RAM works)

(Zen 3 APU with ECC support isn't easy to get, since the non-PRO variants' iGPU doesn't support ECC despite its CPU technically does)

RAM and SSDs are stupid expensive now. Used to be these off lease minis were more affordable. That won't happen until the AI bubble burst.s

Glad I snagged mine when DDR4 and SSDs tanked. My 6th to 8th gen intels aren't the fastest CPUs out there, but with 32GB of RAM and 1-2 TB SSDs they can run a lot of services for the home without breaking a sweat.
