I haven't used a Mach 3 in a long time. But I remember it being so vastly better than anything else at the time. How does it compare to modern offerings? Been using a Schick Hydro 5 for a few years now.

Gillette introduced the Mach 3 in 1998 after spending $750 million in R&D and another $300 million in launch advertising. It was the most closely guarded secret in their history and was produced in a very secure factory-in-a-factory. Very secret, very controlled and limited access. Steven Davis, a process controls expert for a Gillette subcontractor, stole the Mach 3 design and faxed it to all of Gillette's competitors because he was angry with his boss. He was convicted of stealing trade secrets and served 2 years or so in jail about the same time as the launch

Compared to the earlier Sensor and Atra two-blade razors, the three-blade Mach 3 has a special coating on the blades that makes them feel sharper. Your Hydro has a trimmer blade, which I find useful. The Mach 3, no. But, the Mach 3 is narrower and easier to clean. It is still preferred by many, despite its age, because it is especially non irritating and comfortable. At launch, the Mach 3 was about $1.70/cartridge which is about $3.50 today. This deal is about $0.90/each with a handle. Comparatively, and for this technology, a remarkable deal

I've used many, including the old Techmatic and Trac II. My preference among the cartridges is still the Dorco lineup, which I use when traveling. At home, I use a Muhle R41 DE handle with an Astra blade. I find DE razors give me the best, closest, most comfortable shaves. Far superior to all the multi-blades. (TSA does not allow DE razors on planes)

I just looked, and the last time I ordered DE blades (from Amazon) was 2018. 100 blades for $9 - and I still have plenty left. Imagine spending less than $10 for more than 8 years of the best shaves ever. YMMV
