I've got a similar old Craftsman mortiser, but rarely use it. Discovered years ago that using a router in a router table, with a smooth fence and the appropriate sized straight bit was an effective method, at least for blind mortises. Dropping the stock down slowly, keeping it tight against the fence, then moving slowly the length of the mortise. And doing it in multiple passes, for depth (raising the bit before each pass). For 3/4" thick stock, a 5/16" carbide straight bit works well for mortising.
