The marketing is bigger number better. The reality is each has a different ideal application due to different viscosity. I buy 4 and 6, and still use MX-2 for some applications, and I only buy 30 g tubes. These 4 g tubes are all overpriced by comparison. Even a light DIYer can use a 8 g or larger tube for a decade if they want. Contrary to whatever AI nonsense pops up, none of it dries out in the tube, or loses performance until heat cycled. I know I have tubes of other assorted brands that are 20 years old now, and still fine. Bottom line, absolutely not worth 40% more for MX-7. DIYers are easy targets for high margin products with relatively low cost.

MX-4 is an older thermal paste that still works for basic repastes, especially on lower demand devices like a PS5, and long term use shows it can hold up for years without drying out or major degradation. The main appeal is value in larger tubes, since the tiny 4 gram pack is pricey per gram and bigger sizes can be only a few dollars more. The main drawback is that MX-6 or MX-7 is often viewed as the better buy for modern CPUs, with MX-7 offering a small performance edge and less pump out.

  • MX-7 is reported to deliver slightly better thermal performance than MX-4.

    UniquePanther652

  • MX-7 is reported to reduce pump out compared with MX-4.

    UniquePanther652

  • The deal price can work out to about $0.70 per gram, which may be favorable versus larger tubes.

    Foomonchoo

  • MX-4 has reportedly held up for years across multiple CPU builds without notable degradation.

    BargainSeekerG

  • MX-4 is described as an outdated formula that should not be used on modern CPUs or GPUs.

    funnyguy

  • MX-4 is said to be fine for something like a PS5 but not for a current-generation CPU.

    JMBauer74

  • MX-6 or MX-7 is described as better, but MX-6/MX-7 can be very gooey and annoying to apply when re-pasting multiple times.

    rugs

  • The MX-4 deal is criticized as overhyped because MX-7 is only about $3 more when shopping around.

Exactly. The difference between pastes is limited. I used a 2007 tube for 15 years across multiple builds no issue. Used another MX-4 across 3 builds in 8 years, and all held up. Fours years of operation on CPUs that were less power efficient (and similar Watt rating to current gen) had negligible degregadation.

Spend more if you want, most paste is cheap, but don't expect miracles from a higher marketing number.

How much performance improvement for MX-7 over MX-4, just curious? Was it worth the 40% extra premium?
The MX-7 does have better performance by a small margin, but most of the praises I have heard have been a reduction in "pump out".
