One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

The Best Offer - A story about a fine art and furniture auction house owner and his obsession with a reclusive client. Guessed the ending of the movie about half way through, yet it was still enjoyable. - 3.5/5

Open Sesame: The History of Seeds - For a liberal food doc it was quite boring. Usually love these.

Death Sentence - Kevin Bacon goes on a quest for vengeance when one of his kids is tragically killed. Great. Available free on YT.

Ex Machina - Hated it. Mostly because the main character was such a horrible person. And I don't like movies where you have to go online to read some article with the director to fully understand the ending. In the hands of another director with one casting change it had potential to be much better.

Side Note: a good access point for free movies in high def online: Alec Baldwin movies> Videos> click on any one YT suggestion off to the left and keep going till you find what interests you. If you use FF with AdBlock there's no commercials. May even stumble onto some new releases.

Check your public library. Most carry tons of movies and tv shows on dvd and are now doing streaming online through different services.

Did you hate Ex Machina because it made you mad, or because it left you unsure? I was really mad at the end, but I think that's the mark of a great movie - you really felt something.

Amy ~ 2015 documentary on Amy Winehouse. Not a jazz fan but got into her story on YT and then just had to see this. So much freaking hype and superb reviews. The film reminds me of something your kid throws together and wants you to look at and really appreciate. It's difficult. Save your money.

It's very haphazard and incomplete. For it's length, there's a lot of missing parts to her story. They don't cover her death at all. Amy comes across as someone without any empathy or compassion for anyone else which makes it difficult to like her. Unbelievably talented though - but the film offers nothing you can't get by watching free random YT videos. Mostly it just left me incredibly angry. With a timid mother and a father hell bent on reaping the rewards of her success. (They inherited her estate.)

Worth a repeat... You absolutely can have someone committed involuntarily for drug abuse and/or the inability to care for themselves. Amanda Bynes. Joan Kennedy. Maureen McCormick's dad. Amy's family and so-called friends didn't love her enough to do s**t. The film at least shows that. The only other plus is that it never shows the faces of the people talking so the film is always on subject.

Is that the case in the UK? I dunno is why I ask. I agree they could have done more and didn't but not sure how it works over there.

She went into rehab several times, and IIRC a judge sent her to rehab some of those times. But you have to want to get clean or it won't work.

Watched most of The Wrecking Crew [wikipedia.org] the other day. Interesting subject matter, but I don't feel like the documentary itself was very well made. Seems mostly like someone sat down with a bunch of the musicians involved and recorded what they had to say, and then edited it. It doesn't have a cohesive feel, and due to the rambling nature, doesn't feel that informative.

Whaaa? I loved that movie. I guess I was so enamored by the anecdotes and the talent that I never really cared about the editing.
It was the guys son who made the movie... Tedesco? I don't think he had any film background, he just wanted to tell the story.

I had quite the movie marathon over the long weekend: 28 Weeks Later (2007), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), Horrible Bosses 2 (2014), Twelve Monkeys (1995), Christmas in Connecticut (1945), It Happened Tomorrow (1944), and The Babadook (2014). The Babadook did the job well, and Horrible Bosses 2 fell pretty flat for me. I really loved Edge of Tomorrow, and that was the first time I had ever watched Christmas in Connecticut. Uncle Felix stole the show in that one!

Edge of Tomorrow is based on the book All You Need is Kill, a Japanese short novel. Check it out if you liked the movie. It's subtly different and you can read it in a night. Highly recommend.

I was truly in awe while watching that movie. Maybe it's just because I had no idea of what went on in that era, but I loved the way it was done - just people BSing about one of the greatest eras in music history and their monumental contributions.
I loved the things like the drummer who didn't want credit on the rock and roll albums because he considered himself a jazz drummer - meanwhile he's on the drums for some of the greatest rock hits of all time. Cool shit.

Yeah, I suppose it's entirely conceivable that I'm expecting more than it was intended to convey. I guess I was thinking it would be more similar to Sound City.
And on further ponderance, I should see what other music documentaries they have... I've already watched the aforementioned Sound City, and It Might Get Loud, and more band-specific things like Classic Albums - Dark Side of the Moon (which I love, watched it a few times, fascinating to hear the discussion of the nitty-gritty), Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage, and others here and there.

I haven't even heard of most of those (I've seen the Rush one.) I will have to check a few out.
