I think it's mostly to prevent scratches on the edges of the screen. Or from laying the phone on a table (it'll sit flat with that bumper on, I think)

I do think it kinda defeats the purpose of an air to put a case on it

I have one of these bumpers and I can confirm that the phone does NOT sit flat on the table with the bumper on. In fact, the "camera island" is so thick that most cases cannot achieve a flat back
