This telescoping magnetic pickup tool set is a handy grabber for retrieving dropped metal parts from tight spots, and the concept itself gets strong praise for being simple and useful. The 80 pound tool is described as the one for heavier jobs like fishing out a barbell plate behind a furnace, and the set is called a lifesaver for all kinds of small recoveries. The main caveat is that the stated pull force sounds optimistic, since the numbers refer to pulling weight and the tool may break contact if the angle shifts. Value also depends on whether three tools are actually needed versus a cheaper two pack.

Common Questions (3)

  • The listed 30 lb / 40 lb / 80 lb numbers are pull-force ratings, not lifting ratings, so the practical holding strength is lower in real use. The 80 lb tool can reportedly lift only an 8 lb steel object barely, and a small change in angle can make it break away.

  • It is useful for retrieving dropped metal items in tight spots, like behind a furnace or under equipment. The telescoping magnet design is also handy enough that people tend to keep using it once they have one.

  • The 3-pack makes sense if you want multiple sizes on hand, but the 2-pack at $7.18 is the cheaper option if you only need a couple. The value depends on whether you actually want three tools.

Are you sure it wasn't a 10mm socket that went missing?

Lifesaver. Whomever came up with these.
I'd call them a genius, but a telescoping magnet just makes sense.

80 lb pull force? With this cheap thin straw??
I don't even know how somebody can write that with a straight face.

One reviewer tried lifting an 8 lb. steel object. Only the "80 lb." magnet could lift it, and just barely.

But I was really hoping for a $10 magnet so strong that I can't reasonably remove the objects I pick up.
The description is a bad joke, but imagine having to apply 80# of force to remove the item you dropped.

Y'all know there's a big physics difference between lifting weight and pulling weight? The numbers quoted are for pulling weight, not lifting weight.

That's true. Some are confused on the difference. That's they display a hammer for the 80lb pulling weight.

Prob 50lbs without it easily breaking contact. . At or near the max a minor change in angle of pulling will often cause it to break away

Is there any reason to not get the two-pack for $7.18? Does anyone really need three of these?
