These CAP rubber coated dumbbells are praised for their ergonomic shape and comfortable, normal sized handles, matching the product photos rather than a straight bar design. The main recurring issue is a strong rubber or chemical odor that can linger for months and be noticeable near the rack, though the smell reportedly fades over time or can be reduced with vinegar and airing out. They also arrived in two UPS packages for one shipment. A solid fit if the odor does not bother your space.

  • The dumbbells can be ergonomic and match the pictured shape rather than being straight-bar style.

    ShrewdLadybug742

  • A water-and-vinegar wipe plus air-out routine can eliminate noticeable odors on the dumbbells.

    thatamsyndrome

  • The rubber smell can fade after a couple of months while the dumbbells hold up well.

    asuchemist

  • Some sets may have no noticeable smell in a dedicated gym room.

    Supahot

  • A strong chemical odor can persist for years and remain noticeable within a few feet of the rack.

    RelaxedMoon452

  • The dumbbells can develop a stinky odor after being kept outside or in a garage, leading to regret.

    Gloucesterman

  • The dumbbells may arrive with a noticeable smell in two UPS packages, requiring odor removal right away.

    keithpre

  • The 20-lb handles can feel thinner and less comfortable than other weights even when the rest looks similar.

Put off by the comments about them having a strong chemical odor. My weight rack is in my bedroom
50/50 mix of water/vinegar. Wipe the dumbbells down with it. Let it air out. Wipe it down again with a damp rag. You should be good to go. My dumbbells don't have any odors anymore. Just rinse and repeat when they get the stank from workouts on them.

I have these and after a couple of months the smell goes away. Unless you put your nose right up to the rubber. They are holding up good too

I have the set of Cap dumbbells for two years and they still smell. I have to keep them in the garage and you can smell them any time you're within 5 feet of the rack.
They are rubber can't you put essential oils to change the smell?

Anyone know if they have normal sized handles? I have a set of 20's but they are much thinner and not nearly as comfortable as the rest of my weights. I don't have that large of hands either and they are noticeably smaller, but other wise look the same as any other rubber bell and chromed handle dumbbell.

They are ergonomic like in the pictures, not just a straight bar.

Finally got these today, of course then come 2 day air from UPS in 2 packages. Shipping sound like more than the dumbbell. Now to try and get rid of the smell.
