I remember when I used magnet to degaus monitors and corrupt hard drives 20+ years ago. magnets don't damage PC components anymore, but I'd still stay clear of mechanical HDD though.

This is horseshit, unless you used one that was not for electronics, matter of fact these are charged with a very small magnetic field enough just to hold a screw, today's PCB's are well shielded and protected.
