I am a tech enthusiast, and I am currently using this exact model now. It is very much worth it.

It is capable of running actively developed open source firmwares and enhancements. It has not crashed or bogged down with my Dual-Wan 2.5 gbps and 1 gpbs fiber, and has handled full speed real world wifi benchmarks.

I run AsusWRT Merlin on it as well as running AMTM scripts (all nerd crap) and utilizing all ports no problem.

The only particular issue I have seen is the lack of mounting options. Even the 3D printed mounts that do exist only mount it ports side down.

Really torn between this one or the BE86U that is also on sale with coupon. From most reviews I have seen, the BE86u outperforms the 88 in most Wifi speed tests. Curious if anyone has verified or debunked that on their own.

For me I only have one wifi 7 device and that is the latest pixel that came out last week. Unless you are going to a bigger house or have the latest tech, I agree upgrading is not going to do much. I have RT-AX88U and didn't notice much difference when i upgraded from the AC68U. If anything older tech will need more configuration with the latest routers.

The 86 seems to be more stable and have fewer problems with random disconnects from everything I've read so I'd get that one if I had to choose between these.

6Ghz is the shortest range and most easily blocked WiFi band. It can also maintain the highest bandwidth and data rates, but you can already get gigabit with 5Ghz, which is faster than most internet connections available across the globe. Even if you do have faster internet, so few activities could actually utilize internet speeds this high. Just torrenting and downloading games, or uploading videos or backups.

I mean, I'd take you one further- if you're not specifically looking to use the least congested band (6ghz), willing to take the range penalty, AND have devices that would benefit from it (all three of those things), you're probably better off buying a much less expensive wifi 6 router, and jumping to 7 when there are more options.

Find me a cheaper router with an SFP+ port built in, please. And if it also had 8 other ethernet ports built in at the same time, that would be great.

I just bought the BE86U for $206. This is obviously a better deal for the price. I'm not really concerned about the extra 10Gb ports, but I really like the idea of more Ethernet ports. I'm also concerned about range for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Should I return the BE86U and get this one instead?

I'd return the BE86U and get the BE88U. Why? Because the BE88U has 2x the memory (2GB instead of 1GB), more ethernet ports, and an additional 10GB SFP+ port. BE88U also gives you an additional spatial stream on 2.4ghz (4x4 vs 3x3 on the BE86U). More spatial streams = more concurrent connections + marginally better range and maybe even a little more speed (but probably not too much since 2.4ghz is a very saturated/crowded wifi band). You may not notice a huge difference at 4x4 vs 3x3, but it is still more.

I also don't think 2GB RAM by itself is enough to warrant switching, but more memory isn't a bad thing and combined with all the other stuff, I would certainly return the BE86U for the BE88U.
