They have a 6.99 footlong deal running at any given time. They rotate through the same like 6 codes. Pair this with discounted Subway gift cards and you end up with a $5 (or less) footlong. Costco for the longest time sold $75 worth of gift cards for $55 for example. Can pretty easily find gift cards for $0.70 on the dollar.

Is a foot long worth $8? Probably not. Is it worth $7 probably not. But for the current equivalent of $4.30 for a footlong I've been paying, can't beat it.

I miss the $5 footlongs too and it has in fact changed Subway to something I have every week to something I go to once or twice a year, but let's not forget that other than a brief (and quickly aborted after franchise owners complained) "2 for $10" that they did when COVID happened and the office lunch customers were gone, it's been over a decade since they've had that. I'd expect them to charge a least a little more than $5. I think it was really more that $5 was too good of a deal, while paying the regular price just shows Subway is mostly meh.
