There's a huge caveat. That 45% is only if you don't have an active ultimate sub.If you have an active sub and try to redeem these you only get 105 days out of it

This is a 12 month Game Pass Essential code that is mainly useful for stacking and converting into Ultimate at a reduced rate. The reported conversion math is about 45 percent for Essential, with up to 36 months stackable, and the combo trick can drop the price to $61.64 with Holy Potatoes added. The main caveat is that the better conversion only applies without an active Ultimate subscription, since an active sub can redeem to just 105 days. Newegg also charges tax on digital items for some accounts, which can erase part of the savings.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. The stack limit is 36 months, so you can load up to 3 years of Essential first and then upgrade to Ultimate for the conversion payout.

  • Game Pass Essential converts at about 45% of remaining time when you upgrade to Ultimate, rounded up to the next full day. The conversion is capped at 36 months of prepaid time, so 12 months of Essential becomes roughly 5.5 months of Ultimate.

  • No. With an active Ultimate subscription, redeeming Essential reportedly only adds 105 days instead of giving the 45% conversion rate, so the best savings come from converting only when Ultimate is not active.

  • Newegg can charge tax on digital items, which makes the deal less attractive for some buyers. Others reported no tax on this purchase, especially when using the combo discount with an added cheap game.

    hydrointeractalanSJ

  • Yes. Adding Holy Potatoes for $0.41 triggered an automatic $3.76 combo discount and brought the final total to $61.64, which is cheaper than buying the Game Pass code alone.

Is ultimate even worth it? I think premium is good enough for most people, unless EA play is important for them
You're forgetting a LOT of first party games etc

For me, Amazon, etc., does not charge tax on digital items, but Newegg does, so this isn't really a deal. Thought this might apply to others as well.
I just bought from Newegg earlier this morning. No taxes. I added Holy Potatoes for $0.41 as suggested by the OP and paid $61.64 after automatic $3.76 off combo savings, exactly the figure listed by the OP. Clearly, it's a better option to add this game and get a final price of $61.64 as opposed to buying the game pass alone for $65.

I'm not paying $200 plus a year for game pass ultimate. It's with about $100 a year. If I don't have game pass ultimate I will usually buy a couple launch games a year. The game pass has to be cheaper than that to make it be lucrative.
