This Ti-84 Evo seems uhh divisive.

It seemingly adds two cool features:
  • More/better graph Points of Interest
  • USB-C (objectively better than USB-Mini)

But then two of its other "new features" people view negatively (rather than positively):
  • New graphical home-screen, meaning when you turn-on you cannot uhh calculate without going into a specific mode/app first. There's also no way to change this so that it loads into a specific app instead of the new home-screen at startup.
  • "Simplified Keypad" meaning keys in textbooks/instructions may no longer exist; and if you're familiar with the old layout you need to re-learn it.
Also because it has moved ecosystems, all the eZ80-based software no longer works/exists. So all the hobbyist stuff people liked to do don't really exist (yet?). Plus some Ti-84 apps/features like Science Tools (periodic table, conversions, probability simulation, Cabri Jr., et al) are still missing.

On top of all this while the Evo is significantly faster hardware wise, currently a lot of software is somehow slower, or at least feels slower. People have speculated Ti rewrote a lot of it from assembly into an easier/cheaper to maintain higher level language and lost a lot of performance in doing so. So the hardware is better, and building the thing is likely cheaper for them, but the end-user hasn't benefited as much as their marketing would have you believe.

So I guess what I am saying is:
  • If you buy the Evo, at a discount, it is a gamble that Ti fix what can be fixed (startup experience, slower performance, add Science Tools), the community fix some other stuff (i.e.. missing software), and that you can live with the "Simplified Keyboard"/layout issues.
