It's still VERY easy to become way overpowered early in the game if you know what you're doing, and possibly even if you don't. But I don't think that was something they were wanting to remove, as the mechanics are a core feature of the game.
The handful of features they added to this version were welcomed, in my opinion. No spoilers, but I have to assume anyone who enjoyed the original PS1 version or even the PSP version will be happy with this one.
At the end of the day, it's an enjoyable game with a great story that can be viewed and directed from two different perspectives. And you really should play through both perspectives.
Wish it went on sale for Steam.
