Any thoughts on this vs. the Fiskars X13 Ultralight Hiking Axe that was posted for about 50% more ($28.30) the other day? In terms of quality, holding up over time, needing to use the warranty, responsiveness of warranty claims?

You are way overthinking (over using) a hatchet. Respect.

The Ares weighs almost 3x as much as the Fiskars X13. I'd pack the fiskars but probably not the Ares, which I would probably prefer for less primitive camping or use at home.
I would not put much stock in either warranty personally, and consider either a gamble.

Never buy a tool with a fiberglass handle. As it ages fiberglass splinters are guaranteed

I have hatchets that are over 20 years old. They last forever unless you run it over with a tank

18" is a length where it's tempting to use one hand (but less controllable), more awkward to use two hands, and easy to hit your own body. Just as an FYI. It really depends on what you're planning to do - if I'm not using a 14" hatchet or a 32" splitting axe, I'm using a power tool, lopper, machete, or pruning saw.

Although not quite a hatchet, and not quite a backpacker axe, seemed like a good deal. Expired deal though, back up to $48
