The Onkyo TX RZ70 stands out as a flagship 11.2 channel AVR with strong real world performance, Dirac Live standard, and upgradeable room correction. It is praised for plenty of power, solid build quality, modern HDMI 2.1 compatibility, and testing that appears to beat its published specs. The main hesitation is value, since the RZ30 and RZ50 are often seen as close enough for far less money, especially if you already use external amps or do not need future Dirac ART support. Its 19 inch depth and Adorama return terms also deserve a look before ordering.

Common Questions (5)

  • It is mainly a power, build, and feature upgrade rather than a guaranteed audible one. The RZ30 and RZ50 can deliver similar results for many setups, while the RZ70 adds more power supply headroom, newer streaming apps, and a heavier chassis.

  • Yes. Dirac Live is standard on the TX-RZ70, and Dirac Bass Control can be added as an upgrade. That makes it attractive for buyers who want room correction now and the option to expand later.

  • Yes, that is a key reason some buyers are upgrading from older receivers. It is being considered specifically for compatibility with sources like PS5 that need 4K at 120Hz and VRR passthrough.

  • It is about 19 inches deep, so many cabinets will not fully contain it and it may stick out the back. Measure your shelf depth before buying.

  • Onkyo lists a 3-year warranty for RZ-series receivers bought through an authorized dealer, but Adorama's product page shows 2 years. The practical takeaway is to verify the dealer's authorized status and the exact warranty terms before ordering.

Love that tvs are cheaper and cheaper and audio gear is going up... Sigh
Unfortunately people pay this price because they read this is the best deal because of some testing/measurements that aren't an audible benefit.

Most would get pretty much the same performance from the RZ30 at more than half the cost!
It has the exact same Dirac standard & upgradable as this.

That's exactly what you would be paying for with this.
You're better off buying the RZ30 especially at half the price($700).
It will give you everything this does in your scenario ime
Where is the RZ30 available for $700?

So if I use rew for audio calibration there's really no reason to switch...
If you know how to "properly" calibrate your set up(not this watch a YT video, set crossovers & done in 5-10 mins version).
You probably don't need RC.

Premium RC like Dirac just does most of the work.
You then just make any further adjustments to your preferences, if needed.
The nice thing, you do it all within the program, no more REW/MSO!

Personally ime, the main reason to switch to Dirac is their Bass Control RC.
What Dirac says it does, is pretty spot on & worth every penny ime.

It's been awhile, might be longer with current turmoil going on.
It's been $800 more often which is still better than $1500.

Nothing even close to these performance specs for this price

It actually outperforms its published amp/power supply numbers in real world testing

SINAD testing is also top notch as well

Based on the Audioholics results, I am certain this would pass Amir's testing

How much of an upgrade would this be over my old onkyo rz830? I'm running 5.1.4 on it currently and don't need more channels or power. Room correction upgrade worth it?

I just ordered a 98" qm8l TV...benefits for it I'm unaware of? Thx
The RZ70 would be a significant upgrade in power compared to what you have now
There may be some cheaper options if you dont have a desire to upgrade speakers

For your situation the RZ30 or RZ50 might be just fine

I personally owned the RZ50 for about 18 months and it worked fine in my smaller room with book shelf speakers

Dirac , which these units come standard with, is head and shoulders above to my ears, what the other Asian manufacturers come with as standard

Question - Adorama's webpage details indicate the warranty is only 2 years. Onkyo's website states the RZ series receivers include a 3-year warranty when purchased through an authorized dealer. Adorama is listed as authorized. Is it safe to conclude these are covered for 3 years? TIA.

I have had this unit since launch 2 years ago and it's a beast. Grab Dirac bass control on sale during black Friday and you're set. Just wish Dirac ART would be available for it...

IMO, that would depend on what you have and what you want to do if you are buying one of the speaker packages that is popular here on slick deals...then I agree, for many reasons, there is no reason to upgrade

And it is sad that it is mainly advances in televisions that dictate changing your receiver. I don't know how many unused receivers I have due to upgrades associated with changes in how it connects to your TV. (composite --> S video--> component----> HDMI----> HMDI 2.1 ....etc) Rinse repeat.
