The Husqvarna 460 Rancher comes across as a capable 60cc gas saw for occasional cleanup, firewood, and storm damage, with enough power to handle a 24 inch bar in the right use case. It has been credited with cutting through large pine and poplar sections, starting reliably over years of use, and saving time versus smaller electric saws. The main knocks are its plastic clamshell construction, heavier weight, and the sense that a 24 inch bar is more than it wants for frequent big cutting. A lighter bar or a more robust Echo 590 is the recurring comparison.

  • Landowners maintaining trails or cutting firewood with a 20-inch bar, because it starts reliably, has plenty of power, and has held up for years of regular use.

  • Homeowners clearing storm-fallen trees who need a saw that can cut through large trunks without bogging down, because it handled a dozen sections and saved time versus smaller saws.

  • Occasional firewood cutters who want a lighter full-size saw for mixed cleanup work, because it often pulls a 24-inch bar fine when the cutting is not constant.

  • Cutters who want to run a 24-inch bar hard all the time, because the saw can struggle to pull that much bar.

  • Buyers who prioritize a more rugged crankcase and fewer plastic parts, because this saw uses a plastic clamshell instead of a magnesium crankcase.

  • People who need a heavier-duty 60cc saw for frequent big cutting, because it lacks the extra horsepower and beefier construction of stronger alternatives.

That saw is gonna struggle to pull that bar... Put a 16 on it and do work.
For many folks needs - occasional tree cleanup and firewood - it will often pull a 24" just fine. It depends on what you do with it. We often put longer bars on so we are not cutting hunched over when doing firewood, but we used it for cutting big wood on occasion.

I did a lot with my 460. Ended up replacing it with a 545mkii, so I sold it. Had 24" and 18" chains for it and it worked well. 24" is a lot of bar if you are doing frequent big cutting, but that's not really what these type of saws are used for, nor what most people comparing chainsaws at SD are looking for.

Only reason I got rid of it is that we had moved to a 500i for big stuff, and a 545mk2 for light cutting.

I've owned this saw for around 5 years and use it with a 20 inch bar to maintain hunting trails (large poplar, oak, and maple). I run mine a lot and have never had a single problem. It always starts and has plenty of power. They are a bit heavy, but as long as you can get it to where you need to use it without carrying it, you will be happy with its performance.

Most people don't realize how much power they're losing to that unused bar and chain. Stick with the shortest sprocket nose you can get away with, and let 'er rip!

cs590 is the way and you can find them cheaper, 24" is too big for this saw.
