Gen 5 read/write at 13-15 Gb/s gets pretty toasty apparently. This seems great for a homelab and laughable overkill for the gamers it likely targets.

Across 3 PC's I have 7 m.2 drives and none of them have heatsinks on them and the newest drive I have among them is 4 years old, the oldest being 7, and none of them have even come close to hitting any dangerous temperatures and all work great to this day.
I wanted to give purpose to a 2tb gen4 drive that I had bought at the beginning of 2025 for.. $109 (now $279 lol) that I had installed in a thunderbolt enclosure that I never used. Was doing a new proxmox machine build a few days ago and figured it'd look nice in there.
That drive is the coolest thing in the machine. Sitting at 27c/80f just idling. My office is 77f. Front case fans hit it straight on.
It would not go in the top most NVME slot on my motherboard - would have collided with my noctua cpu cooler. It may work there if you have a water cooler or stock cpu cooler.
Anyway, good deal, just look at your motherboard layout first to see if you can actually use it without screwing something else up.
