I agree with both of you. I think season 7 was the hardest adjustment which i stopped watching when it felt aimless. I recently went back and watched season 8 and 9, they went back to what made the show likeable for me and did it even better. Rick and Morty character studies with everyone else mixed in sometimes.

They need to tell the new rick to flatten out his voice more. Most of the time that he doesn't sound right is totally avoidable.

Roiland definitely wasn't the showrunner. The 70-episode renewal deal with Adult Swim in 2018 was negotiated through Harmon with basically no presence from Roiland. He started being randomly absent from work during season 3, and by season 4 he would rarely show up at all. He didn't contribute anything as a writer by that point. After the pandemic, he would continue to work from home, recording his lines in isolation from the other crew who claimed to only see him during mandatory PR outings. Of course there were lots of claims that he was personally an asshole, and there's the assault charges and grooming allegations, but it's pretty definitive that when he was fired he wasn't contributing anything to the show other than voice acting.
