Hyperion is a landmark sci fi novel that stands out for its ambitious, Canterbury Tales style structure and enduring reputation, with Hugo and Locus awards and repeated praise as one of the genre's best. The first book still lands strongly on its own, and the full Hyperion Cantos gets singled out as a top tier series, especially for readers who want to continue past book one. The main catch is that the story does not really end here, so the next book is needed for closure. It can also be dense enough to lose the thread on a first pass, making it a strong fit for readers who like challenging, foundational sci fi.
Common Questions (4)
Yes. The entire four-book Cantos is described as worth it and a must-read sci-fi series, with some readers even preferring the later books.
It can be challenging. One reader needed two attempts and still did not understand it, while others describe it as a seminal, highly regarded sci-fi novel.
Yes. Book 1 is still considered great on its own, even if you never continue the series, though it does not have a full ending and continues in the next book.
No. The story continues into the next book, so this volume ends without a full resolution.

It's a shame the author went absolutely nuts later in life, but he also recently died, so you can buy this without supporting his nonsense.
Rest in peace to the recently passed Simmons; I phenomenal author.

Glad Jeff VanderMeer hasn't taken a similar turn. His Southern Reach series is one of the few I've put on the same level as the Hyperion Cantos. The other being the Ilium series, also by early Dan Simmons. All stuff I wish I could wipe my memory of so I could experience it fresh.
Haven't read the fourth Southern Reach book though, really need to.
