Thanks for posting this OP.. but if I can make a suggestion to anyone reading this? Of course in these hard economic times it goes without saying you can only buy what you can afford so if this is the best you can do then I guess grab it on the "it's better than nothing" standard.

But as we found out the hard way after two thousand dollars worth of damage to our appliances when we had a lighting strike hit nearby our house (I know I know odds are low that this will happen to you but - odds were low it would happen to us and it did Stick Out Tongue

) a cheap surge protector won't do that much good far as say that expensive TV or desktop/laptop computer you've got plugged into it.

I know it's twice the money but I'd argue it's worth it for the peace of mind ... if you google search "wirecutter recommended surge protector" (wirecutter basically spends all their time testing stuff and giving recommendations as to what they think is the best bang for your buck.. the article I'll link in my comments involves testing from a lot of professionals in the field including an electrical engineer who stress tested the surge protectors to see which held up best ) the tripp lite surge protector (the specific models they recommend that is) have come up year after year as their top recommendation. The "Eaton Tripp Lite TLP1208SAT Flat Plug Surge Protector 12 Outlets Home TV" is $55 from amazon but again I'd argue worth it for the peace of mind

I had lightning strike the chimney across from my grandma, destroyed my sister's computer. We also had lightning strike about 500 feet south 10nyears before and blew up a tree. Anything is better than nothing but never think lightning won't strike, it will.

I have 2 of these exact anker strips and they held up great when we had a surge. And I had tvs computers etc hooked up to them. But things like my microwave and a small mini fridge and a couple air purifiers that were not on surge protectors and got fried.

Excellent suggestion for much better protection.

I would say if you own your house, just buy a whole home surge protector for the added piece of mind. They aren't outrageously expensive but do require installation. The big bonus here is your appliances will be protected too. The one in your article is $75 right now off Amazon.

Of course, I'm renting so I just unplug the main electronics before most storms and have a tripplite for my TV.

I don't even view these anker outlets as a true surge protector. They are just very nice power hubs in my opinion.

If your house is prone to lightning and surges I recommend getting a whole home surge protector in addition to these strips for proper protection.

That won't save you from a direct hit! The best you can do is a clamp at the meter which cuts power to your home during a strike. That's why they are called "surge" protectors and not "lightning" protectors.

I own several of these, and they work well and are made of quality materials. The only thing is... I would buy these for well under $20 just a year ago. Hate to see them be so expensive nowadays.

If lightning strikes are an issue for you, then you really need to be protected at your electrical panel. A electrical surge is significantly less energetic then the spike from a lightning strike. They even have ratings on how big of a surge they can protect you from, and they're all one time use too, once they stop that surge they won't stop any more, you'll often notice this with a flickering of the power (or some other light) on it, of course that doesn't stop 99.99% of people from still using it as a multi plug outlet.
