Pretty much. You can get the same core/thread counts on AM5 and with much cheaper motherboards. The only reason to go with a 16 core Threadripper is if you know for a fact that you need more memory channels or PCIe lanes than you can get from a 16-core Ryzen.

I thought these kind of CPUs are irrelevant compared to GPUs. I.E. you'll get more performance upgrading your GPU.

But if you are finding a cure for Cancer with these I salute you.

T-Pain didn't even get one when he went shopping at Micro Center and they sell Threadrippers. He's doing 3D modeling, Video Editing, gaming and VR.

Threadripper systems were always so interesting, but for me retained value too long relative to developments on desktop platforms. If I ever want to tool around with 16 cores (without the need for massive RAM or PCIe capacity), it would be trivially easier and cheaper for me to just toss a sub-$300 CPU in one of my aging AM4 motherboards(!).

How would this compare with, say, adding a PCIe switch to get more lanes out of a lower-end system? For "AI" workloads, the GPUs could potentially be configured to communicate p2p through the switch without going through the CPU...

For what reason can't people use 5950x or 7950x instead of this Threadripper? Ryzen is 16/32 and use less power. Thanks! I am a noob.

Surplus SP3 Epyc processors are probably just as good given that those are DDR4 platforms and still have 128 PCIe lanes with motherboards that aren't too crazily priced. These fat processors are really only for people who want tons of PCIe lanes for multi-GPU or multi-PCIe expansion card setups without bottlenecking. If you just want a gaming CPU, just get an AM5 processor.
