The Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE is a strong budget air cooler known for quiet, effective cooling and solid value. It handles high end chips well, with reports of a Ryzen 9 9950X3D working in a tiny ITX case and a Ryzen 7 5700X3D staying in the mid 70s. The cooler is also described as larger than expected, so case clearance and RAM fit may need checking. At around $35, it is a capable pick if you want serious air cooling without paying for liquid cooling.
Common Questions (5)
Yes. It has been reported cooling a Ryzen 9 9950X3D in a tiny ITX case effectively, and a Ryzen 7 5700X3D staying in the mid-70s under load. It is also described as overkill for CPUs at 120W and below.
The Phantom Spirit 120 is often described as the slightly better cooler, but the performance gap is small enough that either is a strong budget choice. This deal is also described as a better price than the PS120, though only slightly cheaper than usual.
The listing appears mislabeled: the link goes to the Phantom Spirit 120, which has 7 heat pipes, rather than the Peerless Assassin 120 SE. The two coolers are reported to perform very similarly, with only small differences.
The ARGB "rainbow puke" version is noted as being a penny cheaper, and the all-white RGB version is described as the same cooler. If aesthetics matter, those variants can be chosen without expecting a meaningful performance difference.
It is a fairly large air cooler, so case clearance should be measured before buying. The front fan may need to be raised to avoid resting on RAM, and some builds may require reseating memory after installation.

Improved (??) V3 version for about $3 less $$.
(it's rare but I've had to do that a few times on my Asus motherboard over the three and a half years I've had it and the CPU and ram I bought at the same time - motherboard gets confused, I get an error message when booting up and reseating the RAM fixes it but that hasn't happened in .... I want to say a year now?... )
Huh, that's good to know. I thought the extra heat pipe would make a difference, but maybe not. This is definitely a good deal for anybody that needs a nice air cooler.
