P models have 2 connection options - Base connects with wi-fi and has bluetooth for connection with phone via app...no Sub-1G connectivity
G models have 3 connection options - Base connects with wi-fi and sub-1G but also has bluetooth for connection with phone via app
Personally I almost exclusively use the Sub-1G connection because my bbq and smoker are on the opposite side of my house from my kitchen and the Sub-1G connection is much more reliable than wi-fi or bluetooth.

Worlds better than the MEATER I was using, which could barely communicate with the base/app when the smoker lid was on.
