In a past CIO gig, a major manufacturer fulfilled my order of 800+ desktops, but the manuf shipped me units with CPUs that were a clock-cycle step down from my spec. Still: the units were not what I ordered. I told account sales rep to pick up their still boxed PCs and correct the order. The rep told me, "Since they've reached a customer site, opened or not, we have to sell them as refurbs".
Manuf then asked if I was interested refurb price purchase (with partial refund). I accepted on the condition that manuf reduce unit price another 10% for my employer.
The description states "CONDITION:Good Refurbished. Professionally tested, cleaned, and verified to be fully functional. Moderate signs of prior use may be present, including light scratches or scuffs." And even if they did wipe it off and reinst. windows, that's normal with refurbished units.
What else would you call refurbished, otherwise?
Community Reviews
This Surface Laptop 5 refurb stands out as a premium, lightweight Windows machine with a strong 12th gen i7, solid build quality, and snappy everyday performance. The 16GB memory is fixed, but the NVMe SSD can be upgraded, and the price feels fair for the hardware. Arrival reports describe clean units with light cosmetic wear, and battery health has landed around the listing's 80 percent floor. The main cautions are the usual refurb uncertainty, no charger in the listing, and some units arriving with Windows 10 Pro or minor setup issues. A practical pick if you want a modern Surface without paying full retail.
Common Questions (5)
The refurb is described as professionally tested, cleaned, and verified, but the unit may still show moderate prior-use wear such as light scratches or scuffs. Reported arrivals ranged from clean with only minor bottom scratches to missing a foot pad, so checking the device immediately after delivery is wise.
A charger is not guaranteed in the listing, but at least one unit arrived with a brand-new generic magnetic Surface charger. If you need one, plan on possibly supplying your own or treating the included charger as a bonus.
Yes, the NVMe SSD can be upgraded. The RAM is fixed, so storage is the only practical internal upgrade path mentioned.
Battery health appears to vary by unit, but one checked example showed 40,930 mWh full charge capacity versus 47,700 mWh design capacity, or about 85.8% health, with 82 cycles. The listing's at-least-80% battery claim is consistent with that result.
Yes. One unit shipped with Windows 10 Pro but auto-upgraded to Windows 11 Pro before first use, and another arrived already on Windows 11 Pro.

Here is from my report:
DESIGN CAPACITY 47,700 mWh
FULL CHARGE CAPACITY 40,930 mWh
CYCLE COUNT 82
- Design Capacity (47,700 mWh): The amount of energy your battery was built to hold when it was brand new.
- Full Charge Capacity (40,930 mWh): The maximum amount of energy your battery can actually hold right now at a 100% charge.
- Health Percentage: 40,930 ÷ 47,700 × 100 = 85.8%
This listing said at least 80% so I feel pretty good with this purchase.Join The Conversation
