That's pretty close to the deal Microcenter was running last week, not sure if they still have it. 32 GBs of DDR5, a Gigabyte board retailing for like 200-250 and a Ultra 5 250K for $500, same thing with the 270k for $600.

Not if someone doesn't hold the cartel to account. Commodity parts should not be subject to this kind of blatant price manipulation.

If you're running dual GPUs for LLMs, would X870(E) be better than B850 for more PCIe lanes, or would you be bottlenecked by the x4 chipset bus regardless?

In the early days of LLM, if you can fit the LLM into the VRAM of both GPUs (in most of the cases) once it starts running, the impact is really small. It will take an extra minute or two to load it but once it's loaded, the model just lives in VRAM and never leaves. But keeps in mind that, in most of the cases, the usage of VRAM will be nearly max, the usages of two GPUs will be like 50% each, or 33.33% each for 3 GPUs, or 25% each for 4 GPUs, etc..
Adding more video cards just dont give you a lot of value after say two or 3 GPUs.
People use multi-GPUs setup to save $$ and ok with the lower tokens per second performance.

Just a few days ago(in last week), someone figured out how to use multi-devices and load LLM into these devices (desktop, laptop, tablet, Andriod phones, etc..) and run one of the latest Chinese LLM with the home wifi network, the token per second is like 1~7. It's slow, I wouldn't say really usable. But it does run. The cheapest 8GB VRAM / RAM device is the $40 android phones with port in number. The setup requires some py coding and not click and run. It requires some understandings of programming, not for novice.

And about a month or two ago, maybe three? There is another guy figured out how to load LLM into a groups of SSD. Once LLM is loaded, there is not much of write operations anyway. PCIe x4 SSD is still cheaper than RAM, just not that cheaper. But if you want to run a full LLM and low on $$, then this is one way to do it.

My $0.02 is that the cheapest way to use AI today is to get one of the free online sites and go with it until the limit is reached, then think about paying if the work you do can make money.
And for the work that will be banned and can't use online AI models, then you run one of the open sourced ones locally.

One last thing, if your work is actually valuable, dont use online AI at all. Open AI recently fixes part of the math problem with 10000 AI agents and about $20~$40 millions US dollars worth of tokens. I'd bet some math guy upload his/her work to Open AI and Open AI is like oh this guy is almost done, lets rush it. I heard the reward of this problem is about $1 million USD. Spending 20 ~ 40 and get 1 back + the fame = good IPO plan, I bet.
