The WD Elements 8TB desktop drive is mainly attractive for shucking and bulk storage, with the 8TB size called the best value among the sale sizes. The newer post COVID units appear to use the WD80EDAZ air filled model, while older Elements and MyBook drives used the WD80EMAZ helium filled version. Pricing is the big issue here, since the deal appears to have expired or jumped to $379 at checkout, and the current per terabyte cost is being compared unfavorably with past purchases and used drives. A practical option if the listed price is still available.

  • Business users needing bulk storage, because the 8TB price can be lower per terabyte than other drives found in the current market.

  • Shuckers comparing 8TB desktop drives, because the Elements model may use the WD80EDAZ drive family linked to earlier enterprise-style internals.

  • Builders who want an air-filled 8TB drive, because newer Elements units use WD80EDAZ and may run hotter than older helium-filled models.

  • Shoppers expecting a true bargain, because the price can look high per terabyte compared with past 8TB purchases.

  • Business-account buyers checking out at the advertised price, because the 8TB can show $379 at checkout instead of $191.99.

  • People wanting cooler-running helium-filled drives, because newer 8TB Elements units use air-filled internals that may run hotter.

I remember and I held off on buying something back then. I am really kicking myself.
Forget about the hard drives. Western Digital's stock price went up 2,600% over a 14 month period through this past June. In hindsight, that's where I would have put my money.

Hurts to buy now knowing what prices used to be before the AI boom, but nice to see a sale on these nonetheless

I got four MyBook 8TB drives back in 2019 for $125 a piece for shucking. That was a good deal back then especially given that they were all HGST enterprise drives. It looks like these Elements drives might be the same WD80EDAZ .

Yes, newer WD elements 8TB (post covid) use WD80EDAZ = air filled. Older WD elements/myBook (pre-covid) uses WD80EMAZ = Helium filled. I have both. EDAZ is newer, but may get hotter than the older EMAZ.

I know prices were getting bad, but this is just stupid. I paid $150 for a similar 8TB WD Easy Store in 2017 from BestBuy...

This is such insane price fixing and collusion to drive up prices artificially using AI as an excuse. This is even worse than the Thailand flood of 2011 which drove prices up 30-40%.

If you need storage, you're probably better off going to ebay to find used drives for sale.
this isnt remotely anything like price fixing and collusion, Look at the price of storage devices, even non SSD like these. The prices are insane everything.

Mine are the He version and one sprung a leak a year or more ago. SMART says He is at 10% but it isn't running any hotter than the others. I think He is BS. https://www.backblaze.com/blog/he...ure-rates/
