Southwest's 40 percent off base fare promo looks strongest for flexible travelers chasing specific routes or off peak times, especially where Southwest offers more direct service. The deal can be improved with Southwest gift cards from DoorDash at 10 percent off, and one Austin to Tampa round trip came in at $219. But the sale often hides behind inflated base fares, airport and carrier fees, and hard to search fare calendars, so the final price can land above last week's fares or even above Alaska, Delta, or other airlines.
Retired travelers with flexible weekday schedules, because Southwest discounts can be easier to find outside Friday and Sunday departures.
Travelers based in the Pacific Northwest, because Southwest can offer more direct flights for less cost on routes their network serves.
Families booking specific routes early, because one round trip from Austin to Tampa was available for $219.
Families or route shoppers watching fares closely, because the sale price can be higher than last week's fare on the same trip.
Shoppers expecting the sale to beat other airlines, because Southwest can still price about $200 higher on the same dates and airports.
Flexible destination planners, because you have to search each airport separately to see which flights are actually discounted.
Travelers comparing total trip cost, because airport and carrier fees can erase much of the base-fare discount.

Their credit card offer makes it seem like you have to get a card to get the discount. Click past the CC ad and you realize price isn't discounted any more than any other airline for that time.
