The DS200 is a low-cost bi-directional OBD2 scanner that still works like a normal code reader without any subscription. It can handle basic live data and sensor monitoring, and pairing it with the Car Scanner ELM OBD2 app is described as giving plenty of real-time information. The main concern is the $49.99 per year renewal after the first year, especially for buyers who want long-term bi-directional support on newer vehicles. There is also uncertainty about future protocol changes and whether updates will stay free, so it feels best suited to older cars and basic diagnostics.

  • The scanner can function like a normal OBD2 Bluetooth scanner for code reading regardless of subscription status.

  • The scanner can support live data monitoring without requiring a subscription.

  • The Car Scanner ELM OBD2 app can provide real-time sensor monitoring and data tracking when paired with a generic Bluetooth OBD2 scanner.

  • Bi-directional capability may remain useful for older vehicles, since the device is described as working well for 2026 vehicles and prior.

  • Future diagnostic protocol changes like SAE J1979-2 OBDonUDS could require paywalled updates or even hardware changes.

  • The annual post-trial subscription cost may make the bi-directional upgrade feel not worth it after the first year.

  • TPMS tire pressure readings may not be available over OBD2 on a 2008 Honda CR-V with direct TPMS sensors.

  • Bi-directional functionality may become effectively obsolete for newer vehicles if bi-directional update support lags.

49.99/year after the first year..no thanks. Great entry price, but for those considering, just buy the popular XTool A30 or Vdiag D200 (same backend) instead which is lifetime of updates, and can do more bidirectional commands too. Buy off their eBay stores for cheaper than amazon's price.

Coupons stacking on my account on eBay for the Xtool. Manufacturer and an eBay tech 20% off.

The subscription isn't necessary to use the tool. It will always function like any normal OBD2 scanner tool will regardless of subscription status. Besides, most of the subscription benefits most people will never even use. Once I get a code readout from one of these things, I've always used the internet to get a more complete and thorough explanation of the code anyways.

Thanks for the great tips!

Would you recommend them both equally since they have the same backends? I see the Vdiag d200 is about $25-$30ish more expensive currently. Are you familiar if it has more features in your experience?

Big thanks for any insights!

Do I need a subscription to read live data such as live Transmission running temperature?

No subscription needed for that. It operates the same as any other Bluetooth OBD2 device without the subscription. I recommend using the Car Scanner ELM OBD2 app. https://play.google.com/store/app...r&hl=en_US It gives you real-time sensor monitoring, data tracking and is widely considered the gold standard OBD2 app on android now that the torque app is getting dated. I used it with my cheapo generic Bluetooth OBD2 scanner and it gives me more information than I'd ever need.

The subscription is highly unnecessary. It will always function like any other normal OBD2 scanner regardless of subscription status.

According to a quick google search, the answer is no, an OBD2 scanner will not read the tire pressure (TPMS) sensors on a 2008 Honda CR-V. This is because the 2008 CRV uses a direct TPMS system with battery-powered sensors in each wheel (315 MHz) that communicate with a dedicated standalone TPMS control unit which is separate from the OBD2 diagnostics system. If your car didn't use a direct TPMS system, you'd get a readout like this.

Thanks for the recommendo! What cheap-o scanner do you use? I take it, even at $40, there are cheaper ones out there that'll do the same as this one?

I only paid 12 bucks for this one about a year ago and it worked great until i didn't need it anymore. https://www.amazon.com/Veepeak-Bl...46&sr=8-27 I don't use it anymore only because I now use the one that came with my android head unit I installed but I'd have no problem using my old one if my head unit didn't come with it's own. I used The Car Scanner ELM OBD2 app with both that one and my new one and as much as I can tell, there's no difference in the information it provides. It has almost 19,000 ratings and 84% are 4 star or better and I'm willing to bet most of the lower ratings are due to user error because there's just no way somebody can be disappointed in what this thing does, if they are using it properly.
