The DS200 is a low-cost bi-directional OBD2 scanner that still works like a normal code reader without any subscription. It can handle basic live data and sensor monitoring, and pairing it with the Car Scanner ELM OBD2 app is described as giving plenty of real-time information. The main concern is the $49.99 per year renewal after the first year, especially for buyers who want long-term bi-directional support on newer vehicles. There is also uncertainty about future protocol changes and whether updates will stay free, so it feels best suited to older cars and basic diagnostics.

  • The scanner can function like a normal OBD2 Bluetooth scanner for code reading regardless of subscription status.

  • The scanner can support live data monitoring without requiring a subscription.

  • The Car Scanner ELM OBD2 app can provide real-time sensor monitoring and data tracking when paired with a generic Bluetooth OBD2 scanner.

  • Bi-directional capability may remain useful for older vehicles, since the device is described as working well for 2026 vehicles and prior.

  • Future diagnostic protocol changes like SAE J1979-2 OBDonUDS could require paywalled updates or even hardware changes.

  • The annual post-trial subscription cost may make the bi-directional upgrade feel not worth it after the first year.

  • TPMS tire pressure readings may not be available over OBD2 on a 2008 Honda CR-V with direct TPMS sensors.

  • Bi-directional functionality may become effectively obsolete for newer vehicles if bi-directional update support lags.

Thanks for the great tips!

Would you recommend them both equally since they have the same backends? I see the Vdiag d200 is about $25-$30ish more expensive currently. Are you familiar if it has more features in your experience?

Big thanks for any insights!
Yes, both are equally great. vdiag has a prettier iOS app is probably the only benefit, but the xdiag has the volt meter built into the hardware.

The subscription isn't necessary to use the tool. It will always function like any normal OBD2 scanner tool will regardless of subscription status. Besides, most of the subscription benefits most people will never even use. Once I get a code readout from one of these things, I've always used the internet to get a more complete and thorough explanation of the code anyways.
True, but anyone looking to buy because of the bi-directional aspect and expect to have a new cars in the next decade or two should look at the ones I shared. Otherwise you'll have just a normal OBD2 scanner only as this will be obsolete for bi-directional updates in just a few years for new vehicles, particular new generational vehicles that come out, but work perfectly great for 2026 vehicles and prior.

That makes sense. but apparently, starting just next year, all 2027 model year cars and forward in the U.S. are transitioning to a new diagnostic standard called SAE J1979-2 OBDonUDS and it will replace the old OBD2 protocol anyways. When you think about it, it's amazing they've been using the same protocol for as long as they have. Nothing else in technology stays the same for that long. The OBD2 protocol is already 25 years old. That's ancient in tech years. We were still on USB 2.0 back then. Just to contrast how much more advanced we are now vs back then, USB 3.2 for example is over 4000% faster than USB 2.0.

Great point, even more reasons to be sure whatever anyone buys today can receive updates to support this upcoming protocol. And it's up to the manufacturers of these scanners whether they even want to push out the update or get greedy using this transition to OBDonUDS as a way to force upgrades.

Gooloo's website is very confusing, they list out the annual price as a subscription and the first year as a "free access" ..sure hope they mean the annual subscription is for future updates only and the access to the device's existing bi-directional isn't removed and placed behind a paywall making this just a dumb-down OBD2 reader only. Do you know?

Hopefully it's that easy but I'm not so certain you'll be able to fully update from OBD2 to the new protocol via a software update only. From what I understand, the new protocol changes the diagnostic communication but I'm not exactly sure what's being changed to to do that. If it's purely software based then an OTA update would be an easy fix but if its a hardware update, you're gonna need a a new diagnostic tool to get all the new features. The good thing is, they shouldn't cost a lot more than what we have now, but basically, if it's a hardware update, It should be like going from USB2 to USB3 so the older tool might still work, but to get everything the new protocol has to offer, you'll need to shell out for new hardware.
