if you have an AMS and cardboard, an awesome find has been these hobby lobby $3.50 reusable spools. Works perfect converting cardboard spools over to my AMS 2 Pro. I too had problems with cardboard spools before this. Super easy to convert cardboard spools, takes 30 seconds.
been using cardboard spools for years now in my AMS.
just print rings if you're concerned, it doesn't take much time at all... most companies these days put a nice coating around the edged of the cardboard spools as well making it irrelevant, Elegoo does this as well on recent rolls i've gotten from them directly.
ELEGOO Rapid PLA, PLA Plus, and Rapid PETG are described as fast, reliable filament that prints well and compares favorably with Creality Hyper and other PLA brands. The cardboard spools are the main friction point, especially for AMS setups, where they can flex, bind, or need printed rings or reusable spool conversions. Packaging also seems inconsistent, with rolls sometimes arriving taped together or damaged in transit. A solid filament pick if the spool handling works for your setup.
Owners of AMS printers who can use cardboard spools, because the filament feeds smoothly and prints well in AMS setups.
It can work in AMS units, but cardboard spools are the main risk point. Some users run ELEGOO cardboard rolls in AMS v1/v2 with no issues, while others report feed pauses when the cardboard flexes or the roll sits crooked; printed rings or a reusable spool can help.
The Rapid PLA+ is described as some of the best PLA used, and Rapid PETG is reported to print great with no spool issues. A few users also say ELEGOO filament works as well as Creality Hyper series and keeps printing reliably over long-term use.
Packaging can be rough: orders have arrived as five rolls taped together, sometimes with torn boxes or damaged rolls, and one shipment was refunded after missing rolls. Other orders arrived intact, so the shipping method appears inconsistent.
If your printer will not arrive until Christmas, it may be better to wait because Black Friday can bring good filament deals. The filament itself is standard 1.75mm and should work with most printers, with PLA recommended as the easiest starting material.
Do you need to re-wind or do you just break the cardboard rim and slide the filament over to the plastic spool?
I don't have AMS, but based on other comments and posts, why not use the plastic ring on the roll? Many vendors even have STL files for it on their websites.
Somehow when the AMS tugs strongly on filament from a cardboard spool, the cardboard flexes and the spool doesn't unroll, causing the filament not to feed and causing a pause in the print. Plastic is hard and doesn't flex. I've observed this mid spool on a multi hour print and had to come home to switch
haven't had this happen once... everything i buy these days, aside from Bambu, is on cardboard spools and i haven't had a single issue. certainly nothing like you're describing.
on the rare occasion a spool is damaged during shipping (yeah, Elegoo SUCKS at packaging... just wrap the box in plastic ), I just use printed rings and all is fine.
sounds to me like you just don't have the spools sitting on the rollers correctly and it's causing binding.
Dumb question but why does cardboard vs plastic spool matter? Like what issues? I have an Ender model and haven't had issues but I'm printing cookie cutters.. soooo
That's primarily an issue for the AMS crowd, but there's another niche problem: drying. Cardboard spools absorb a lot of moisture themselves, so when you're trying to dry a filament on a cardboard spool, you're essentially drying the cardboard as well, wasting energy and time.

Same - I have no problem with cardboard spools. Lots of easy fixes if you're concerned.

Good to know if I am in a pinch. Usually I can find someone on marketplace if needed. I am buying some empty Sunlu spools tonight $5 for 5. I bought some refill packs because of price and the colors I needed. But don't have an empty spools currently.

Dang. Most of what I want is out of stock for matte pla. I want navy which is in stock but other to round out the order like black, white, gray, brown... all out.

Odd, I've seen people having issues with cardboard spools a lot (and I don't doubt they're telling the truth), but I've only ever used cardboard & never had an issue. Is it only with the AMS, not lite?
I'm a total newbie and my kids want a 3D printer for Christmas. Do these work for most printers since I havent bought one yet?
Yes, any 1.75mm filament will work with most standard printer. For the start stick to PLA.
If you will be getting printer in Christmas no point buying this now, black friday have some good filament deals
Agree with all the cardboard hate. Avoid if you can or find a tutorial on how to rip off the sides of the cardboard spool and put it in a reusable spool.
I had no issues with cardboard and then all of a sudden it was constant. When a 10 hour print turns into a 2 day print because the spool causes an issue and you're not home or sleeping and there goes hours until you restart it and then 1 hour later it fails again...& repeat
I've had my X1C with 2 AMS' for years and never had a single issue with cardboard filament rolls. Most brands epoxy or singe off the edges to prevent any issues.
I don't know. I ordered some petg from Amazon(plastic rolls) and it clogger my feeder, had to clean it up and ruined my print as it couldn't pull filament. I would get something else for a few more bucks
misinfo, bordering on malinfo. I have had zero issues with my ams and i exclusively by cardboard spools. Dont even need the retarded rings. Just put it in the AMS and be done.
