UGREEN HomeAgent is pitched as a local AI home automation hub with NAS features, aimed at people who want smart home control without relying on cloud services. The appeal is the Home Assistant style flexibility, with room to add security tools like Frigate and expand into lights, shades, garage doors, and thermostats. The main pushback is price and value, since the hardware is seen as expensive versus building a setup from an old PC, Raspberry Pi, or a DIY homelab. Support also appears uneven for some devices, and reliability concerns linger from past UGREEN hardware issues.

Common Questions (4)

  • The listed pricing is widely seen as hard to justify for the hardware, especially the top model at $10,000 when a Jetson Thor is cited at about $5,500. The appeal is the promise of local AI and home automation without cloud dependence, but the value depends on whether that bundled convenience is worth more than building a Home Assistant or homelab setup yourself.

  • It can cover some of the same home automation use cases, but Home Assistant on an old PC or Raspberry Pi is a cheaper alternative. For users who want more control, Home Assistant plus add-ons like ESPHome or Frigate can replicate much of the functionality with more setup work.

  • No, not everything is supported out of the box. Garage doors can be added with kits or manual methods, and thermostats just need to support Home Assistant integration, but some devices such as certain garage doors and AC thermostats were not supported in earlier attempts.

  • Yes, the security side can be expanded with Frigate alongside Home Assistant. That setup is commonly used for camera-based detection and has plenty of guides, tutorials, and walkthroughs available online.

It's local AI (at least supposedly), that's the whole selling point. And yeah, knowing everything going on in your house is nice. I got into homelabbing a bit and have Home Assistant, there's so much you can do with it it's kinda obscene...
Yeah, I can kind of understand that. But isn't even $900 to do that kinda expensive, especially when you have to trust ugreen on it being actually local AI?

At $900 it's not THAT expensive if it delivers what they promise. This looks like it's aimed at people who want home ai automation without relying on the big cloud providers or delving into setting it all up themselves.I just started with Home Assistant recently and it's not for the faint of heart when it comes to some things. And if you want actual total control with ESPHome and things like that it gets pretty involved with ESP32s and sensors and programming them... Things like lights and shades and whatnot can also be a hit or miss depending on what control system you go with. Though many things are catching up with native HA support.

Not all the things seem to be supported by this. My garage door and ac thermostat I recall not being able to add in years ago.
Home assistant is hands down the best and most powerful smart home server. It continues to evolve and get better constantly. Nowadays you can even use AI to help with any questions you have or help you need.

+1 for Home Assistant!
If you're looking to add the security portion of the advertised functionality, look into adding Frigate into the mix. Google is your friend here if you don't know what any of this means or how to get started on your own. Plenty of online guides, forums, tutorials, and YouTube walk through.

It's quick and easy to add garage door support. There's kits and manual ways. For the thermostat - just buy one that supports Home Assistant integration. You don't need anything fancy.
