This compact Anova sous vide cooker is mainly appealing as a cheap way to try precise water bath cooking, with several reports that it holds temperature well and turns out steaks, chicken, shrimp, and pork nicely. The low price also makes it easy to test before upgrading, and the unit itself still has physical controls. The main drawback is Anova's app and subscription setup, since push notifications and some features sit behind a paywall, and the lack of buttons on newer models is a recurring complaint. A practical starter pick if app limits do not matter much.

  • Home cooks trying sous vide for the first time, because the cooker can handle steaks, chicken, shrimp, and pork well at a low entry price.

  • People who want a simple way to make steak at home, because it can hold temperature accurately and finish with restaurant-style results after searing.

  • Owners who already use the unit's physical controls, because it can still run without relying on the app.

  • Shoppers using a plastic bath container, because plastic insulates better than metal and can help hold heat efficiently.

  • Frequent cooks who depend on alerts and remote monitoring, because push notifications and some features are behind a subscription paywall.

  • People who want app-free control, because newer units can force phone-app use and lack a physical interface.

  • Long-cook meal planners who need dependable software, because the WiFi models can stop the unit or jump the temperature to max and ruin food.

  • Shoppers expecting a premium-value purchase, because the listed MSRPs are inflated and the same cooker regularly sells for less elsewhere.

heating plastic in a waterbath can't be all that safe......
Boiled is a misconception since people will do steaks at something like 129*. Silicone reusable bags seem like a good option. If you wanted to get down to the nitty gritty having any char is carcinogenic. Almost all the steak I buy comes in plastic. Meats treated with nitrates are carcinogenic especially cooked on high heat. Anything cooked over wood/charcoal, same, all that flavor comes from deposits from burning something. Delicious stuff we love but there's always something bad.

Anova has gone downhill since the 3rd gen came out about 5 years ago because most of their new models have no buttons which means you're forced to use their buggy phone app just to control the unit which is really annoying since I don't always carry my phone while I'm cooking because I don't want to accidentally damage it or get it wet. They have never fixed their buggy software since their 2nd gen unit came out with buttons & optional WiFi built in so this is a hard pass. I have a 1st gen and 2nd gen Anova without WiFi and they both still work great. Literally all my friends who upgraded to the WiFi models hate them because the software bugs out so often and they have had multiple long cook dishes ruined because their software either stopped the unit and turned it off, or kicked up the temp to max, either way it ruined their dishes. This isn't even worth getting for free because when, not if, the software bugs out and it ruins even 1 dish of yours, that will cost you more in ruined food than you paid for this. Get the latest Anova model that does NOT have WiFi built in called the Anova 3.0 because it is stainless steel and has a better clamp design that fits a wider range of containers. The Nano 2.0 is also an OK alternative but that one is all plastic and will become brittle and crack after maybe 4-5yrs of regular use whereas the Anova 3.0 has the stainless steel bottom section so it will last longer.
Or buy a different brand. I'm not a fan of companies who use network connections to cripple their earlier products.

A balanced diet includes a little bit of microplastics.

Any recommendations (serious question)? I still have the OG Anova Wifi/BT unit working just fine after I think 10+ years of semi-regular use. My siblings want to get into Sous vide but I can't recommend Anova after they decided to abandon their original units for a subscription model.

I got one of these about a year ago from them for the same price. I've done steaks, chicken breast, shrimp, pork chops and loins and everything has come out perfectly.

My only issue with the app is that push notifications are behind the paywall so it doesn't tell you when your food is done you have to set a separate timer once the bath reaches temperature or keep checking the app. I think the indicator light on the unit changes color when the timer is up but it's not really clear.

For occasional use, such as mine, it's relatively minor annoyance, but if you plan on using it frequently I'd spring for the $10/yr for the app or more likely buy a more expensive model with better features.

It really is. Multi-device support is also behind the paywall as well. if/when I buy a better souse vide cooker it will not be from this brand. I wanted to try it and see if we'd like it, so $20 was cheap enough to get that done but making it app only and locking a core feature behind a paywall is scummy as hell.

pass. best buy reviews indicate they can't use certain features unless you subscribe to the app.

The app-only situation is not ideal, but $20 is absolutely great for a "trial run" to see if you'll actually use the thing or if it'll just sit in the cupboard forever. If you use it a lot, upgrade. If not, you only wasted $20.

I have this unit and a previous one. This works great. As good as the original one. Great price I'm going to be giving this out for Christmas to all my friends that brag about my cooking skills

fair points. however, I feel this is one way of cooking that one can avoid entirely to just cut this voluntary increase in microplastics consumption down to 0% and just take risks in other areas like broiling or BBQ'ing the steaks instead lol
