I guess it's a matter of preference. I prefer the steel handles. Rubber grip will absorb sweat and oils from your skin and the oils will cause it to break down and crack over time.

Knurling? Its for grip. Actually helps so your hands won't slip.

I have mixed dumbells set, but I would always prefer this grip, especially for heavier dumbells.

Update: set of 25s just arrived. No strong odors, but I'm keeping them in the garage a few days just in case.

My issues is that they are HUGE! For comparison, they are the same size as my CAP 40 lb dumbbells. Weight is weight, and it's a great deal, but these are going to look funky on my rack.
