This rechargeable First Alert extinguisher is framed as a solid, commercial style unit for home emergency use, with a pressure gauge, a 12 year warranty, and a stainless mounting strap on the unit pictured in hand. The deal price lands close to what recharge services charge, so buying new can make more sense than refilling, especially when local shops add fees for nozzles and gauges. The tank is compact at about 15 inches tall, so it looks suited to one emergency rather than heavy duty use. The main lingering question is whether the chemicals age even when the needle stays in the green.

  • Buyers comparing replacement cost to service fees, because recharge pricing can be close to or higher than buying a new extinguisher.

  • People who want a long-lived kitchen extinguisher, because one consumer unit stayed in the green after 35 years untouched and another was still in green after more than a decade.

  • Homeowners replacing a disposable extinguisher, because rechargeable units are built more like commercial-grade extinguishers and feel sturdier than throwaway models.

  • People who want a compact emergency extinguisher for a kitchen, because the tank is only about 15 inches tall and is described as good for one emergency.

  • Shoppers expecting a cheap refill to beat replacement, because recharge shops can add nozzle and gauge charges or price the service above a new extinguisher.

  • People who want a clearly documented maintenance guide for chemical aging, because the manual does not address whether the extinguishing chemicals degrade over time.

  • Buyers who need a large-capacity extinguisher for repeated use, because the tank is small and is described as good for only one emergency.

Almost the same cost as a recharge. Not bad.

The local company that refills extinguishers always wants to charge extra for a new nozzle and gauge, so for me, it's less expensive to just buy new ones.

Got one yesterday. Good deal. Interesting that the photo of it doesn't show the stainless steel mounting strap, but a different version that just hangs on a hook (like the 10 year old one I just threw away). Btw it costs *more* to recharge one of these than buying a new one.

Not sure what kind of shady business you guys in your neck of the wood, but the family business around here does recharge for $25/each, it's been that price for a couple of decades.

$35 for me with one this size. The fire alarm/system company that services my job's building comes twice a year and as long as I bring it in, it's a $35 recharge fee.

If you never have to use this, does it still need to be recharged? If so, what interval?

Sounds like recharge is marketing? Since new is similar price.

The rechargers are there not to recharge consumer extinguishers. Their whole business is centered around recharging much larger numbers of extinguishers of corporations when they expire.

It has a 12-year warranty. My experience is with the consumer models, and I have one in my kitchen that still shows a charge in the green range after 35 years untouched.

Doesn't answer the legit question though?
Mine has been around for more than a decade and still in green state. I am also curious to know if the pressure needle is the only tell or the chemicals also degrade over time?
