I have a slightly different model Epiphone LP (mine is actually a cheaper one). I am absolutely impressed by the quality for the price.

Do you mean the quality of the guitar, price, or both?

Totally depends on respective models. As an example, I own an Epiphone Tommy Thayer white lightning Les Paul and it kills any sub $2000 Gibson LP I've ever tried...

In general Epi Paul's are very good.

I've never had a Gibson Les Paul but considering I'm not a professional musician I don't think I need to spend 3k when $500 will do

I just bought an "Inspired by Gibson" Epiphone Les Paul. I am really impressed. It is not as good as a Gibson, of course, but it is a fraction of the price and offers 95% or so of the performance. Way better than buying an entry-level Gibson.
The Gibson will retain more market value, though.
