Kicking Horse Smart Ass is a medium roast ground coffee that gets praise for flavor, especially when bought on sale. The vacuum packed bag should hold up for a while after opening, but the 10 ounce size is smaller than it looks and the shrinkflation stands out next to a normal 1 pound bag. The main tradeoff is freshness, since pre ground coffee will not taste as fresh as beans ground right before brewing. A solid option if convenience matters more than peak freshness.

  • Vacuum packing can help preserve coffee freshness before opening.

  • Subscribe and Save tracking can still yield substantial savings even when coupon display changes.

  • The coffee can taste better when it is packaged quickly after roasting and grinding.

  • The deal can be competitive when the coffee is compared favorably to Super Crema during promotions.

  • The bag size may be smaller than expected because a "normal looking 1 lb bag" can contain only 10 oz.

  • Ground coffee can lose peak flavor faster than whole bean coffee due to oxygen exposure and increased surface area.

  • The specific coupon deal price may fail to apply for some orders, requiring an alternative option.

  • Subscribe and Save discounts may not stay at 15% even when selecting five or more deliveries.

This particular Kicking Horse coupon deal did not work for me but I found this Amazon Fresh, Nicaragua, 12 oz, that came out to $5.27 S&S if anyone is looking for another option. Just an fyi.

Not knocking Kicking Horse taste. Various blends I've tried have all been very good. Just posting to bring attention to the shrinkflation in this post. This normal looking 1 lb bag of coffee is actually only 10 oz. 🙄
Yeah that's happened to a lot of stuff anymore. A lot of brands have went to a 12 oz bag. And some of the ones that want to squeeze a little bit more money out of us have went down to a 10 oz bag. And if you was to hold those bags up beside each other, you probably wouldn't be able to notice it. You probably just pick up the coffee you like and take it without looking at the amount that's in it.

Not true. The presence of Oxygen accelerates coffee going stale. Once whole green coffee is roasted, it immediately starts to deteriorate if left in the open. It becomes somewhat noticeable (you can taste the difference if you compare it to freshly roasted -- but it is not a bad taste ) after 2 to 3 weeks in the air. It continues to deteriorate and looses positive taste notes as time goes on. Any coffee you buy that is open to the air and then bagged for you is suspect, unless you know when it was roasted. If it is ground and quickly vacuum sealed in a can (with no Oxygen), it can stay fresh up to a year or longer. If it is not ground, and put in a bag with a vent, the gases that are released pushes the air out and it stays fresher longer, but not as well as being vacuum sealed. If it is roasted and ground and put put into a bag, it also releases gases that push out the Oxygen which keep it fresher longer. Whether it is whole bean or ground doesn't make that much of a difference.A brand like Kicking Horse wants to feasibly bag the coffee as soon as it is roasted and ground so that they can get on to processing the next batch. Time is money and it also keeps the coffee fresher longer.Source: 25 years working for a major US coffee company.
Would the ground coffee have a much larger surface area to oxidize through? I worked on catalytic converters and it was all about increasing the surface area for the reactions to take place on so they could save money on needing less rare earth minerals. The smaller the spheres the faster the reaction.

Thank you for affirming to me that I don't need to keep a snobby coffee grinder on the counter to get my daily 3-4 cups of good-to-me coffee. 😊
You don't need anyone's affirmation to like your coffee a certain way. Pre-ground coffee stales much, much faster than whole bean. And your coffee will taste more fresh if you grind it right before you brew it. If that's not important to you, then it's not worth the inconvenience of carefully storing whole coffee beans and grinding them on a daily basis.

Yes. All else equal, ground coffee stales way faster than whole beans. This isn't controversial.

If you're buying ground coffee, I think the taste is already compromised regardless of brand. You're knowingly buying stale coffee when buying ground.
I wouldn't call it stale. It's vacuum packed. Once you open it, you still have a few weeks before it loses it's peak flavor.

A little over 2 months ago Amazon stopped showing me those extra percent off coupons for subscribe and save. I've been told this is because after I received an order I would cancel the subscription. 6 weeks ago I started writing down things that I would have bought and the price. So far I've got close to $300 extra in my pocket. Thanks Jeffy!
Strange. I cancel them all, and no issue. Gonna get this one

My S&S orders are always five or more, so I get the extra 15% off. I have for years cancelled the orders when they arrive and I still get most of the coupons.
Not all S&S is 15% off even with 5 or more

True. Once in a great while I get bumped up to 5 or 10% off but 99% of the time I get 15% off.

Ground coffee is still going to be more stale than whole bean coffee. For one, it's exposed longer to oxygen than ground coffee since there is no additional step with whole bean coffee. 2nd ground coffee has more surface area.I get what your saying where if they are packaged immediately in airtight, than further deterioration will not occur, but it is inherently more susceptible to deterioration before it gets packaged. And then, there is the whole using it process, where again, whole bean is superior because much less of the coffee is exposed to oxygen. There is no comparison between a cup of pre ground coffee and a cup of freshly ground coffee.

Consider the source: "25 years working for a major US coffee company," which surely sells ground coffee among its products.
I'm not disagreeing with the analysis of how coffee stales in the presence of oxygen, but do disagree that pre-ground coffee tastes as fresh as whole beans ground just before brewing, all other variables being equal. Every Q-grader, roaster, and coffee farmer I've met says the same thing.
Not all people will notice or care about the difference in taste; that is true.
