This lasagna style Progresso soup is a filling, hearty canned meal with pasta, sausage, and a rich tomato broth that tastes like adult SpaghettiOs. It can be dressed up with a parm ricotta dollop, and the pasta thickens nicely as it sits after heating. The main watchouts are nutrition related, with relatively high sugar and very high sodium for a savory soup. The sausage is pork, while the broth is beef, making it a solid pantry option when you want something substantial.

  • The pasta can soak up the broth after heating, improving the lasagna-style texture in the bowl.

  • The soup can be very filling, and past deal purchases indicate it works well for stocking up.

  • A parm-riccota dollop can make the soup taste more gourmet when served.

  • The added sugar is described as 4g per serving, which can help shoppers focus on added sugar rather than total sugars.

  • Total sugars can be higher than expected for savory canned soup, with 15g per can mentioned in the discussion.

  • Sodium content can be very high, so regular consumption may not fit lower-sodium diets.

  • The sausage is pork while the broth is beef, which may matter for shoppers with specific meat preferences.

  • Tomato-based ingredients can drive higher carbs and sugar, especially when pasta and beans are included.

The pasta will probably soak up the broth nicely after heating.

That is a surprising amount of EDIT: total sugar. 15g per can noted for those who have to watch that carefully.
15g is for the entire can. Secondly, anything with tomatoes will be relatively high in sugar because tomatoes are naturally high in sugar (since it's technically a fruit). Making things worse, tomatoes are tart so most tomato based foods will have added sugar to balance out the tartness. This is true in pasta and pizza sauces, and even the classic Chinese dish, Eggs with Tomatoes.

So instead of looking at the Total Sugars, it makes more sense to look at the Added Sugar. In this case, the Added Sugar is 4g, or 8g for the entire can (1st photo). For comparison, look at a serving of Prego Pasta Sauce (2nd photo). It has 4g of added sugar for a ½ cup (approx 4oz) serving. This soup probably has less sugar per ounce than most pasta sauces (it's hard to do a direct comparison because the soup's weight includes lasagna and meatballs. Similarly, pasta sauce has more tomato density than soup).

Yes, true. anytime there's a lot of pasta or rice and tomato type stuff in soup, the carbs go up.

Beans too, but beans have a lot of fiber and are more complex carbs.

they add a lot of sugar to the tomato base they use too, probably where the added sugar is coming from. the rest from the lasagna noodles.
No, lasagna has almost no sugar. It has starch, which contributes to the total Carb count, but starch is not sugar so it doesn't add to the Sugar count. Once consumed, our bodies convert the starch into sugars for energy (or store it as fat).

please read my post again. I didn't mean say that the noodles had sugar in them, I said up front contributed to the total carb count. I'll fix that. was just an afterthought to the tomato puree base where I'm sure the sugar is added to, like pasta sauce. thanks for correcting me on my own misspeak.

oh gee, I looked at the other soups in that list, and some have 1 can at 4.99 dollars (the one in this thread is max of 5 cans at 1.59 per can). Scary high prices for some of the others lists as other options.

This is basically adult SpaghettiOs and it is quite yummy. I wouldn't consume it too regularly though, the sodium content is rather absurd.

If you're buying a lot, then Kroger chains have it for even slightly cheaper, 6 cans for $9.
