The Deco X55 mesh system is aimed at extending WiFi through larger homes and plaster walls, with easy backward compatibility for existing Deco nodes and a setup that can be expanded without running new wires. Speed and range improved noticeably after upgrading from Deco S4, and the app and overall reliability were praised in some setups. The main cautions are that dual band wireless backhaul can share bandwidth, so throughput may drop versus tri band systems, and some setups saw lag spikes, bottlenecks, or weaker performance unless nodes were placed carefully or wired backhaul was used. A solid fit when coverage matters more than top tier raw speed.
Common Questions (5)
It can be very reliable for some setups, with reports of Deco systems running rock solid for years. But there are also reports of bufferbloat, lag spikes, and bottlenecks on the X55, so placement and network conditions can make a big difference.
It can help extend coverage to a hard-to-reach upstairs room because the Decos mesh wirelessly and can be placed between the router and the office. Dense plaster walls can still weaken the signal, so positioning the nodes carefully matters; wired backhaul or MoCA can improve throughput if you have coax or Ethernet options.
No, the mesh is designed to work wirelessly, so you do not need to run wires everywhere. If walls or distance hurt performance, wired backhaul can improve it, and MoCA over coax is an option when you want a wired link without new Ethernet runs.
Yes, it can be a meaningful upgrade: one user who moved from Deco S4 to X55 reported significantly better speed and range after installation. The X55 is also backward compatible, so older Deco nodes can stay in the system if you want to expand coverage.
The parental controls can be inconsistent: website blocking may not accurately block specific devices, and bedtime device blocking can be hit or miss. If those features matter, the subscription may not be worth relying on.

Second, the parental controls are not great. I could never get the website blocker to accurately block websites for specific devices. The feature to block devices during "bedtime" would be hit or miss. I ended up cancelling the subscription to the service.
