The Deco X55 mesh system is aimed at extending WiFi through larger homes and plaster walls, with easy backward compatibility for existing Deco nodes and a setup that can be expanded without running new wires. Speed and range improved noticeably after upgrading from Deco S4, and the app and overall reliability were praised in some setups. The main cautions are that dual band wireless backhaul can share bandwidth, so throughput may drop versus tri band systems, and some setups saw lag spikes, bottlenecks, or weaker performance unless nodes were placed carefully or wired backhaul was used. A solid fit when coverage matters more than top tier raw speed.

  • Some setups report long-term reliability with Deco mesh units used for years without issues.

  • Upgrading from a Deco S4 to the Deco X55 (AX3000) improved both speed and range after installation.

  • Deco mesh can extend through plaster walls by chaining signal to a second floor for steadier upstairs coverage.

  • The system can keep older Deco S4 nodes working together through backward compatibility for broader coverage.

  • Deco X55 units can show bufferbloat and large lag spikes even after changing settings.

  • Deco X55 performance may drop to about half the router speed unless a hardwired connection is used.

  • Deco X55 can develop bottlenecks where cameras or printers lag or get stuck connecting over time.

  • Parental controls on Deco systems may be unreliable, with inaccurate website blocking and hit-or-miss bedtime device blocking.

Never owned a mesh system before, do I need any other unit with this for it to work?
Nope, all you need is everything included and to download the app.

I have Asus ZenWifi XT8 AX6600. Is this an upgrade?
The X55 is a downgrade from the XT8. XT8 = Tri-Band (2.4ghz/5ghz/5ghz), with one of the 5ghz bands 4x4 stream, dedicated for wireless backhaul. This means clients get their own 5ghz band and better performance.

The Deco X55 is only dual band so that means one of the wireless bands (likely 5ghz) will be shared between clients and wireless backhaul duty, slowing down traffic for clients...

I'm hesitant of chinese router hardware.
This! It's a 1999 dial up U.S. Robotics Sportster 56K or nothing.

You can also look into a powerline connection as long as you have an outlet near your router that's on the same circuit breaker as your upstairs office. Probably a cheaper solution if your only issue is the speeds in your office.
Considering it is 100 years old house, powerline probably won't work, unless wiring was upgraded relatively recently. Wires could be good to carry 110V, but introduce too much noise to digital transmission. You definitely can try it, but I would not hold my breath....

I'm a total beginner in this field. With Wi-Fi 6E and 7 already common in the current market, is there a specific reason people still prefer Wi-Fi 6, which seems like a totally outdated model? I live in a 1,500 sq ft, two-story townhome.
Primarily because only the latest flagship phones come with it standard. It's not widely adopted yet. That and wifi6e's max throughout far supercedes most residential Internet speed offerings. So unless you are doing massive internal traffic you won't really take advantage of it, and most folks who do that sort of thing would use cabled network anyway.

The one primary advantage to wifi7 is it's the first wifi standard that is full duplex. For most people this won't amount to much but if you are looking for low latency (e.g. gaming) it could offer an advantage, but even most hardcore gamers I know use cabled to ensure lowest possible latency. Truth be told wifi5 is still more than adequate for 99% of households.

The bigger factors to look into is how they implement wireless vs the spec itself. E.g. how many antennas, does it have a dedicated channel / antenna for back haul, proper mimo support, beam forming, seamless roaming (handoff from one node to another without disconnecting sessions), stability of router, regular security updates, value add features like VPN server, etc.

I have a deco s4. Is this worth the upgrade?
I bit the bullet and upgraded from the deco s4. I installed the X55 last night and the difference in speed and range is significantly better.
