This retractable garden hose reel is best suited for light watering and quick cleanup, with the 1 2 inch hose making it easier to roll out and move than larger hoses. The compact design and slow rewind are handy, and it can work well for planters, garden beds, and washing a car or driveway with the right nozzle setting. The main drawbacks are weak flow, frequent kinking or leaks, and reports of the rewind or internal parts failing within months. Winter storage and full draining are important, and the hose or mechanism may not be replaceable if it breaks.

Common Questions (5)

  • It can work well, but several reports describe binding, incomplete retraction, or failure within months to a year. Some units have lasted 2 years or longer with regular use, especially when fully drained and brought inside for winter, but others needed a refund or replacement after early failure.

  • Yes. The 1/2-inch hose has noticeably less flow than a 5/8-inch or 3/4-inch hose, and it can feel poor for general watering. It still works for lighter tasks like watering planters, garden beds, or washing a driveway with the jet setting, but it is slower than a larger hose.

  • Yes. It should be drained fully and brought inside during freezing weather to reduce damage risk. That matters because the reel and internal parts are reported to leak, rust, or fail when exposed to cold and moisture.

  • No, the hose and mechanism are reportedly not designed to be replaceable, so a failure usually means replacing the entire unit. That makes early leaks or rewind failures especially frustrating because repair options are limited.

  • Yes. The 1/2-inch version is easier to roll out, reel in, and move around than a 5/8-inch reel. The tradeoff is lower water flow, while the 5/8-inch size gives better output but is harder to manage and may be harder to find in a 100 ft reel.

I recommend a 5/8" hose. It's actually nearly double the water output if 1/2"
Thank you! This totally addressed my concerns. I know hoses come in different diameters, but never bothered to understand why or what the output would be like. Now I know.

I'm not a big poster here, but every time I see this product I comment. It is awful. The internal connectors will not last. Mine broke immediately on first use and leaked everywhere. I took it apart and it is a design flaw that is not easily repairable. Hard pass.

Second year with this exact model. Gets used a few times a week, no issues with flow or retraction. I do fully drain it and bring it in during the winter.

Don't do it, I'm warning you, very cheaply made, mine only lasted 4 months before it starts leaking inside and only retract halfway

Bought this last time and it constantly leak and require repair. I'm glad I'm handy but it gets annoying at this point.

So can anyone recommend a good quality substitute with 5/8" diameter hose. I mean I'm getting a lot of info about not to buy this one but still want the product type itself

This! The 1/8th additional diameter makes an exponential difference in the water pressure

Actually it maxes out at about 50% more, but that's still a lot of flow.

The last unit like this I bought from Costco - was also at least double the price of this but it's been fine for 4 years.

I bought the Orbit Auto-Retractable Garden Hose Reel, Wall Mount, 100ft x 5/8in - 28263, early this summer. It's amazing.
