As others have said, not a good idea for any mid to high end builds. Never cheap out on a power supply

If you follow the Tier guidelines, F Tier is deemed unsafe and should be disconnected/replaced immediately. D Tier is where they say it's fine for office PCs with low power requirements.

I would not trust a F tier PSU with any build. With $10-$20 more you can get a C+ or better.

A Thermaltake PSU killed 3 of my hard disks at once due to overvoltage. I've used cheapo supplies before but something like this never happened.

Arguably even D tier should be not used for important sensitive equipment, just to be on the safe side, only for wiring it up as a test bench power supply for stuff you don't really care about.

I agree with everything you said. In fact, you can find Gold B- or higher rated for similar price as this. There was a MSI one for $25 recently on Woot (sold out now) and goes for $50, but it's not on the list. Probably better than this, and obviously there are a lot of C+ ones like you said for not much more.

However, I have an extremely old server PC at a family business. It runs proprietary software that can't be reinstalled without a high vendor fee. The IT guy my dad used "built" the PC with a standard, generic PC case that came with one of those low cost/budget power supply units. No 80 Plus certification, no PSU protections listed, just a basic OEM-grade PSU. It has lasted almost 15 years now, powered on 24/7. Granted the power consumption is super low. It idles like 90% of the time.

I think that list is just not applicable to the kind of use case I was implying. I think people get hung up on specs and certs without understanding the context. The whole PSU danger stuff is overblown, no pun intended, when it comes to a grandmother checking her emails on her 2010 Dell desktop. I don't think a low end Thermaltake PSU is going to explode from a 50W office use case. Again, I don't know anybody who even uses a full sized desktop PC for basic needs, so this is a very niche thing now. But considering the options nowadays, I wouldn't buy this either.
