Not sure about this since cold air can still seep through.

These really don't do anything unless you house is leaving hot air at the hose bibs.

Yeah, these aren't really designed for hard freezes. In areas where it gets that cold, you'll want to shut off the external water supply and drain any remaining water from the faucet/pipe.

For areas where the temperature rarely drops below 25°F, though, they work well. They rely on the warmer temperature inside the home to help keep the water warm enough so it doesn't freeze.

looks cool but doesn't hold tight against the house wall itself. isn't that a big point of the styrofoam ones?

Unless your pipes are PVC/PEX, they will conduct heat. No air leakage required.

With that said, I use the frost-proof style valves (long stem, valve itself is deep in the pipe), which can still freeze (I had one freeze due to an improper installation by a contractor that didn't have it draining properly...nothing like paying someone to do the job, then going back in, fixing the damage, and doing it yourself anyway). I use the foam style ones, and haven't had a problem since...but they also help reduce heat loss (due to thermal conduction through the pipes) to the exterior of your house.

Just a decorative bib cover. In for a pair. Will use the Styrofoam covers over these when the time comes.

I used to have 2 of those, and my pipes would freeze almost every winter.

switched to the type in this post last year - not saying it definitely works, we'll see, but so far it's 1-0.

On the plus side, you could probably stuff a wool sock into it for additional insulation. I've bought the foam ones for my sister's house for a few years now.
