Windows defender is good enough these days for most people. However, my laptop was infected last month with something nasty which installed some fake software and even changes my geographical location . Windows defender did not prevent or even detect it even after i run the scan . I install Bitdefender and it detected the malware under 2 mins and removed it. I have Bitdefender on my other PC and never had any malware infection . I would recommend Bitdefender , ESET or Malwarebytes if you want top security for you PC (i have used all 3 in the past and i ranked them top tier so just go with whichever is on sale).

Yep, and if you find yourself in a situation where Windows Defender isn't getting rid of something, the free version of MalwareBytes is plenty. No need to pay for and install redundant software on your machine.

I mean, not everything can be prevented, especially if you click on malicious stuff.

Got this. Its garbage. It blocks its own website when I tried to upgrade to unlimited VPN. Along with blocking other websites so I couldn't pay my utilities.

Although Windows Defender improved to levels that approaching the top players, sometimes the difference in scores between these products is one point. And that one point could be missing one virus vs missing none. And that virus maybe the one that takes down your PC.

My 82 year old aunt asked me to help with choosing the best rated cybersecurity software, because she lost trust in AOL Gold's free McAfee. I said it's Bitdefender, based on the last decade's or so ratings, but it does require some user interaction and basic know-how to setup and manage it. And the risk is worth to have something near the top ratings vs one that she cannot figure out to use. So I told her to get Norton, it's one point behind in certain things, but does not require much of any technical knowledge to manage it. It was designed to be "install and forget" knowing the technology comprehension limitation of the majority of the public. Now, my 82 year old aunt is happy.

Malwarebytes free version is my fall back. I use it to clean my aunt's and uncle's PCs. My uncle always picks up malware like a John picking up the clap in bordellos.

I used Norton for years to cover family. Then they popped up giant obnoxious ads across the desktop, refused to follow their own settings (it's not an ad, it's an opportunity!), and tossed customer trust in the trash.

Moved to Bitdefender, who began doing the same. Maybe not as obnoxious but that is not praise.

Moved to ESET who cannot find their ass with two hands and a map. Every single day, they block their own update servers. Then complain the firewall is blocking the servers. My dudes, I cannot unblock your servers. You control the firewall. Every day. I'm not impressed that they score well on tests in lab conditions.

So now I'm back in the wind, trying to find an option that is the least bad. Giving Norton another chance will feel like defeat.
