Thanks to Deal Hunter phoinix for finding this deal.

Available from: Product Details:
  • From renowned mental health expert and speaker Dr. Gabor Maté, Scattered Minds explodes the myth of attention deficit disorder (ADD/ADHD) as genetically based—and offers real hope and advice for children and adults who live with the condition.
  • In this breakthrough guide to understanding, treating, and healing Attention Deficit Disorder, Dr. Gabor Maté, bestselling author of The Myth of Normal, and himself diagnosed with ADD:
    • Demonstrates that the condition is not a genetic "illness" but a response to environmental stress
    • Explains that in ADD, circuits in the brain whose job is emotional self-regulation and attention control fail to develop in infancy – and why
    • Shows how 'distractibility' is the psychological product of life experience
    • Allows parents to understand what makes their ADD children tick, and adults with ADD to gain insights into their emotions and behaviors
    • Expresses optimism about neurological development even in adulthood
    • Presents a program of how to promote this development in both children and adults
  • Whereas other books on the subject describe the condition as inherited, Dr. Maté believes that our social and emotional environments play a key role in both the cause of and cure for this condition. In Scattered Minds, he describes the painful realities of ADD and its effect on children as well as on career and social paths in adults.
  • While acknowledging that genetics may indeed play a part in predisposing a person toward ADD, Dr. Maté moves beyond that to focus on the things we can control: changes in environment, family dynamics, and parenting choices. He draws heavily on his own experience with the disorder, as both an ADD sufferer and the parent of diagnosed children. Providing a thorough overview of ADD and its treatments, without blaming anyone, Scattered Minds is essential and life-changing reading for the millions of ADD sufferers in North America today.

I love how the bullet points seem to cut off half way through a thought. Typical ADD. I have to disagree with the author though. I find it hard to say its not genetic when my mother, me, 2 of my kids, and 1 grandkid have it.

What's the TLDR? I can't sit still and focus long enough to read how to fix the thing that's keeping me from reading how to fix it.

Another way I've been studying and thinking about health conditions we are told are "genetics" is that habits, nutrition, the way we interpret and handle stress, etc are all passed down by our parents. If everything is high stress and nerves are fried then it will have an affect on every process in the body. This is called Epigenetics.

E.g. the children of obese parents are most likely obese because of the foods available in home, habits of eating, and not exercising are norm... so it would seem likely that heart problems, diabetes, etc will seem to be "genetic".

Further, if you have a friend who doesn't seem to get stressed over anything, there is a decent chance their parents didn't get overwhelmed.

TLDR: there is plausible cause that genetics may be more a function of environmental and the expression of the environment on our bodies various systems (mitochondria, DNA replication, nervous system, vitamin/mineral intake, etc)

For anyone interested, this guy's entire position of this book is at odds with the well established evidence based understanding of ADD. It appears to be largely a genetic disease with many different causal triggers. The stress and emotional difficulties of ADD are the product of ADD itself, not it's cause.

Don't get this. Read or watch what Russell Barkley has to say instead. He's the actual expert who does real science, and he has plenty of criticism of this guy, who gets it wrong.

Studies have shown that genetic factors contribute around 70% of the risk of obesity.

I saw a clip of this author interview Trevor Noah. In it, he seemed to pinpoint one of the reasons Trevor has ADHD is because his parents were stressed when he was a child.
Uhhh, what? Are there new parents out there that are not stressed? Is that even a thing?!

I would entertain both. I've even thought my add issues are due to being tickled till I couldn't think straight. I've done therapy and there's this aura feeling of stop farking with me. I don't know exactly what it is but I think as a child when I got angry or cried I would be messed with. The memories I do have of later suggest that behavior could have been around when I was a baby. There's a lot more after that to mention but the early stuff matters. If attention or action or emotional expression is punished or invalidated. I'd question if you were allowed to angry as a child. My childhood has a lot of confounding variables but don't discount trauma for attention issues or genetics or other environmental issues alcoholic mother etc.. Just try to find the one that address you.
