As someone who owns a Z1 (kickstarter backer) the thing is absolute garbage software.
Is it possible to run other CAM software with this cnc or is it locked to only using its proprietary stuff? I've been looking at desktop cncs and I see Makera referenced a lot. How is the machine aside from the software?

I have a Z1 Pro. Yes, the software they provide sucks eggs. There is already Community Firmware and Community Controller software that vastly improve the functionality of the machine, easily installed and with an ever-growing wiki of guides.

You can run it with most any other CAM program. There are both makera and community provided post processors. I run SolidCAM and Mastercam with no problem.
Makera is trying to target 3d printing crowd (look at their model site, lol) but what i understand cnc have way higher learning curve and i personally think bit more risky too.
That said if i ever have space, CNC might be next thing i will get in
As someone who works in the CNC metalworking industry, I see these machines more as toys. It's hard for me to overlook that they are so flimsy that they can't even cut mild steel.

Totally agree. What is the closest acceptable CNC for home / hobby use that can still mill steel? Probably used machine from industry?
